Very simple question ( I hope) considering taking on a long term project to build a 7mm Practical and as I'm very new to this do I require an action in 7mm Rem mag or 300 win mag to start? I just saw a Win mod 70 in 7mm rem mag and thought maybe..

Re: 7mm Practical
Hi Michael, the Practical fits the post 64 action nicely. Works well on all of the M70 long action variants including the push feed XTR.

The M70 magnums all share the same action. The only difference within the mag box, is that the 7mm rem Mag has a sheet metal block spot welded into it to make it a bit shorter. Simply drill the spot welds and remove the block, then sand away any burrs. Job done.

Things to be aware of:

1:9 twist is optimal.

Best to try and find a stock with a bit of girth to the forend as opposed to the slim and short forends which are so very common. Even a Boyds Classic laminate will do the trick.

Suggest full length bedding rather than front and rear. But either way, if the action has a middle screw, nip it up only. Do not try to set it tight (if you want it firm, use loctite / not torque).

Suggest a one piece canted rail but note, the M70 did vary a bit from model to model. Perhaps look into EGW as they are on the pulse of this.
