Loads for a New 7x64 / 280 Rem

Hi folks,

Well looks like I have some movement on my 7x64 build on a Mausingfield action is starting to move.

So, I'd better think about loads and bullets. I'm looking at 2 loads for 2 purposes I think.

Hunting

Nosler
160 gr Accubond – first thought, hard to beat in my view
150gr Long Range Accubond (There is a 175gr version but think MV might be a little slow)

Sierra
160 gr GameKing (Soft point boat tail, certainly good in my 257 Roberts)
165gr Sierra Tipped Gameking (Boat Tail Ballistic Tip, serious BC claims here)

Hornady
162gr Interlock (Boat Tail Soft Point)
162gr SST (Boat Tail Ballistic Tip)
162gr ELD – X (Wonder if not a bit soft for close in work)

Target
160 gr Sierra Tipped Match King
160gr Hornady ELD

Powderwise thinking Viht 550 ot maybe 560 with the 26" barrel

Thoughts much appreciated.

Mike

Probably should add the 166gr A-Tip to the target list

If your 7x64 has the proper european throat/lead dimensions, it will almost certainly work better with heavy bullets than light.
With the bullets you mention, particularly the LRAB, you will find it difficult to get near the lands while still keeping sufficient shank in the case neck.

You may also find that the long boattail severely limits case capacity with suitable burning rate powders.

The 7x64 has a fraction less case capacity than the 280, but IME WITH A PROPER WORKUP, 7x64 loads end up way past book loads for 280R, with velocities approximating 280AI.

If the throat is some bastardised version of what it should be, all bets are off.

Best wishes and prepare to be surprised.

Hi Iain,

Yes this will be my second 7x64 (fell in love with the chambering when hunted a lot in France no .30-'06 etc as the military calibre ban was still in force).

The first one I had was a Santa Barbara action that Voere put weaver bases on, a Lothar Walther barrel and a detachable mag. One of the scope bases was wonky and getting the magazine to feed was a total ball ache.

Rifle shot well but it got hot fast and started to string shots quickly so shooting in comps and club longer range days was not so good.

Anyway, throat dimensions.

I'm probably going to have the throat set fairly long to work with 165gr bullets as I'm a bit of a "heavy for chambering" fan though I might not go the full CPI spec.

I am hoping to get up near 7mm Rem mag speeds with the rifle due to the 26" barrel.

I think perhaps with the heaviest of the 7mm bullets (the 180gr + very aerodynamic stuff) there's just not quite the case capacity.

It's interesting actually if you talk to the guys who use 280 Rem data for 7x64 as they say it is a long way short of potentialy in 7x64 and one chap I know says he used 280R data and hardly got obturation at max load. Not sure I'm going to try that, there's enough good data on 7x64 to be useful without going there

Any further thoughts very much welcomed.

Mike
