berger classic hunter/hybrids effect on game at low impact velocities

Hi Gents,

since I only have 5 boxes of the 162 Amaxs left I was wondering if anyone had tried the Berger Classic Hunters out on game yet - I'm in the middle of load development for the 168gr 7mm's from my 7mm08. Early results are promising (theyre averaging around 0.5-0.7moa)

I'd like to find a replacement for the Amaxs if possible - according to the manufacturers specs there arent many bullets that perform below 1800fps - I'd really like something that works on game down to 1400fps is possible.... big ask I know!

any advice much appreciated!

Hi Gavin, I am literally just a few paragraphs away from finishing my next book, adding the closing comments today. With a bit of luck this will be available over the next few weeks. Book title is- The Practical Guide To Long Range Hunting Cartridges.

Unfortunately, the Classic hunter will not fragment at 1400fps.

Take a look at the new Nosler Accubond Long Range bullet. Like the Amax, the ALR will expand down to 1300 fps or that's what they are advertising. They make a 150,168,and a 175 gr in the 7mm. BC's are rather high, so I ask one on the tech guys at Nosler and they stand by the BC's stated. I'm going to try the 168's in my 7 mag after hunting season. The 162 Amax is still doing fine and I have 2 boxes, so no need to change course in the middle of the season. I still can't get a deer to step out beyond the 1000 yd mark. Somehow the deer just don't understand my goal for the season :-)!
I've just started testing the 95gr Berger Classic Hunter in my 243. No load yet.

thanks for the heads up - impressive BC's (even if nosler tends to overstate them by about 5% theyre still impressive)

I read somewhere that they dont open reliably at low impact velocities - although I'm not sure how low precisely?

I'm hoping nathan has field tested them and posts the results in his book - cant wait for it to come out
