Heart beat wobble.

So I went out on the weekend for a very successful shoot. My scope was returned fully functional and cleaned after much hassle.

I had previously tested some loads but found that my conclusions were off. The best performance came from a 43.5gr load of AR2206H with a 168gr Amax at 71mm COAL overall group was 10mm. Which is 0.37MOA or 0.11Mil. On a different note I got the chance to shoot a 300 Win Mag which was great. Very comfortable using the right form as described by Nathan. Heavy push but no pain or discomfort.

Anyway... the point is. Have you noticed your heart rate cause wobble during your shooting? I noticed mine giving me about 0.1-0.2 Mil or 0.5-0.8MOA wobble almost perfectly horizontal, left to right. Very interesting. The best thing was to simply wait of course but it was rhythmic enough I could time the shots. My resting heart rate is quite high. Nearly 70bpm, getting below this rate requires the use of sedatives.

Andrew,
I first heard of this a long time ago while watching a documentary on police sharp shooters. The person being interview claimed that he observed up to 1/8" (0.125") of spread at 100 yards.
As my grandpa used to say, "you just have to catch it on the wobble". I usually can tell when I'm settled in to position well and shooting properly when the wobble in my scope is from my heartbeat. There are methods to minimize the effect, and simply timing the shot has been most effective for me.

Great shooting!

Hi Andrew, if you go back to the Shooting book, you will see comments within that may help. I will try to go further into this during video work this year.

Please don't go googling this because it turns up a whole pile of myths and 'new doctrine' rubbish. Caleb has pretty much nailed it via his grandfather's comment.

Your resting heart rate is what it is. A soldier or police officer may have a resting heart rate much higher if he is adrenalised. It is simply a matter of dealing with the reality of the situation as it is, not how it 'should' be. Errors can only be ironed out via practice, not via some twits new minimal contact method and new acronym to go with it because such skills are non transferable. This aspect of shooting is reliant solely on the time you spend behind the rifle.

Re: Heart beat wobble.
Hey guys, thanks for the encouragement.

I am not worried about it all, especially not enough to start looking for advice from tactical forums. Nathan's methods allowed me to sit behind a 300 Win Mag that was lighter than my 308 and shoot it comfortably. I won't be giving up those methods soon.

To me it's more of a sign I need to step away and calm down. Or time the shots, easy enough. I just curious to know how much if it all anyone else notices it.

As you said Nathan, my heart rate is what it is. I am very happy with it. My metabolism has always been quick and I am glad for it :)

Those Biathletes manage okay with up to 180 beats a minute when shooting. I know they've no recoil, but they've wind, fatigue and pressure on for every shot.
They sure do love their slings

They are shooting 2 MOA prone and $.5MOA standing, but still.

Very nice group, Andrew. It certainly came together for you. As to the heartbeat thing, like The Boss says, it is what it is. I've tried to time it just right, and got it wrong every time. Now, once I settle in, I just shoot, and the heartbeat becomes part of the group. Not too often do you see it outside of a calibre off anyway.
