Reduced loads with VihtaVuori Tin Star (N32C)

Hi folks,

I would like to get some feedback with reduced loads using n32c powder.

I was “assuming” this was something “like” TrailBoss, but there seem to be big differences. With TB you can just fill the case, seat whatever bullet you want, go to the range and enjoy.

Some tests/opinions state that you can get into troubles with n32c power if you attempt to do reduced loads. So far, the listed loads with n32c in VV web is very small (https://www.vihtavuori.com/powder/n32c-tin-star/).

I think this powder could have great merit, as you will be able to load with mild pressures to get more than TB speeds.

I would like to get some first-hand experience or opinions on this topic.

My first attempt will be load 120gr sierras SP in a 7RM for a buddy’s son... so I HAVE TO BE in tje safe side ;)

All info & help much appreciated.

BTW: a long time without posting, but always with an eye in the forums ;)

This is the “example” of research i’m referring to:

https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/important-info-about-tin-star-vs-trail-boss-for-reduced-loads.832116/

As you can see this folk is getting conclussons based on QL figures... and atending to full-density loads. I will be -of course- weighting my loads.

By the way... does anybody check how accurate QL was with these power? I have been running some humbers for the 120-7mag and looks OK...

I will be testing the reloads prior to give them to my buddy.

Just in case the n32c was a no-go powder for this application... does anybody have reduced loads for this combo? I haven’n reloaded the 7mag so much. I have 4831sc and VV stuff (n133/140/150/165/550/560...)

Any help appreciated!

Hi Andrew;

Thanks for the interest... no feedback yet...

I will probably make some tests myself, based on QuickLoad info. Then I will load for my buddy.

No TrailBoss available here in Spain

The Sierra 5th Edition reloading manual shows the 120 grain starting loads at about 3000 feet per second. Is that not slow enough or low enough of a recoil?

It would probably be safer to train with a smaller cartridge and work up to the big rifle later.

You can search for an online recoil calculator and try to input different loads and see if anything is close to what you want.

I used one at handloads.com and put in data for the 120 grain bullet, 50 grains of powder and an 8.5 pound rifle. It gave about 12 foot pounds of recoil. That is about as low as the Sierra manual data went.
