Gidday guys

So while my cz is still chambered in 375 h&h I'm thinking of trying some 350 grain smk for shits and giggles. The rifle is cz 550 24inch barrel and I'm hoping its 1 in 12 twist not 1 in 14 of which I'm not to sure.
With a bc g1 of .805 my shooter app is telling me if I can get it out the barrel at 2200fps it will stay supersonic to close on 1500yards, I'm not sure if 2200fps will be achievable but it seems to be the general consensus from people shooting projectiles of similar weight.
Does anyone have any ideas on what powders would be best suited for the job? I'll be using Winchester cases and federal primers

Hi Sebastian, if you intend to hunt local game with these, you'll need to open the meplat right up, then dig in with a round needle file as shown in the Cartridges book, second edition. I suggest you really open them up as the jacket on these is very thick. If the HP is too small, the bullet will not open up until after 9-12" penetration. The outer diameter of the meplat needs to be well over .100" for lean game. These can handle a good chop without any major negative effect on BC so please make sure you go the full hog, set yourself a projectile OAL with your vernier and trim all pills to that length with a new file.

The max OAL for this bullet is extremely long, your CZ will be ideal for this.

I suggest you stick with 2209 (H4350). I have not had any pressure issues with this.

All the best.

Gidday Nathan
I wasn't intending to hunt with them more just tinkering around with abit of long range gong killing to see how the ol h&h goes throwing big hunks of lead but if they will be suitable for hunting with some meplat adjustment that is definitely a bonus.
With a decent meplat trim what velocitys do you think these will reliably open up to on lighter game? Goats smaller deer etc?
I'll stick with 2209 then which is good as I have a good stock of it not being used.
Ill assume i should try seat just off the lands to maximize powder capacity?

Cheers

Depending on the size of your HP, exercise caution at 1800fps. Monitor results before pushing any further.

Its a bit of a catch 22 in that if you do not make alterations, these can be slow killing due to zero expansion and therefore narrow wounds. But if you do make alterations and do the job properly, exit wounds can be extremely wide, in some cases more than you will have ever experienced in the past with other cartridges. But this is what has to be done to turn this into a clean and ethical killer if you choose to take it hunting.

Yes, you can seat closer to the lands with this pill. Just see how this goes versus your mag length.

I've got a 375 ruger and have used the 350 smk and rm. The bc value has needed to be lowered to match the trajectory with both. I've assumed it's because of the low initial muzzle velocity?
