Amax performance 280ai

Hey All,

I was using my mates .280ai while waiting for my new scope for my 7x57. I took a young stag that was slightly quartering away from me at 425yds through the shouder - dropped him on the spot - so no issue there. When we finally got to him and did the usual check for entry wound, I flipped him over and saw an exit hole - not big, half inch. I've never used Amaxs in my life as I've also been a .270 shooter, but I'm going to be using them in my 7x57. It's not that theres a problem here, but I was quite surprised to see an exit wound from an amax that has hit bone? I'm a wee bit concerned that the 500yd range for the 7x57 may be stretching it in terms of velocity (lack off). We worked out that the impact velocity with the .280 was around 2200fps. Mates used amaxs in his last few rifles - .308, 7mmRM and has never lost an animal, in fact the .308 was insane with the amaxs - they were clust bombs when they hit deer. Anyway, should I be concerned that if I don't hit bone with the 7x57 at 450 - 500yds the amax is going to pencil through?

Cheers,
Grant

hi Grant.
from my understand the amax's will perform down to 1400fps, have a watch of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wr7zpwPZ6Q .
the amax's (and possibly the new tmk) are some of the best long range projectiles we got so if it won't perform at the rangers you want your really pushing your caliber.

Cheers Thomas - good video of Nathan. I certainly wont be pushing the boundries, I've been in contact with Bryan Webster (posts here) a few months back on the 7x57 caliber as it's new to me, and he gave some fantastic info on projectiles. From memory he was shooting out to 600yds with the amax on deer. I should re read his emails. Should probably go back through Nathans books too! My memory is like a sive. .
