Bolt tolerance on Howa

Hi all,
Nathan mentions in his book about Howa having the possible problem of too much play between bolt head and receiver. What I want to know is how much is too much?
I have 2 two CMC Mountaineer (Howa imported to Oz about the 80's) short actions and just working out whether to use these for donors or not.
Cheers.

It's a relative question unfortunately.

For example, if you are neck sizing and don't mind a tight fit load, the slop can be taken up in this manner- after making sure the bolt lugs have been lapped. Add to this the fact that the trigger sear is 90 degrees to the bore (Rem have an angled sear as an example), and you can see how it is possible to manually align your own ammo regardless.

But, if the ammo is to be very smooth feeding, then you will want to keep bolt head to play within 3 thou. You have to understand that some folk really struggle with the slightest bolt resistance and get jammed up during primary extraction due to their own handling procedures. In these circumstances, bolt head play can be an issue.

You can think of bolt head play in the same manner as ammo concentricity.

Keep in mind that play at the rear of the bolt can be a problem too, sometimes more of a problem. But the same approaches apply with regards to hand load operations etc.
