"Time Sensitive" Help Needed - Swap .300WM for .7MM RemMag???

Dear TBR Forum Dwellers,

I recently purchased a lovely Dakota 97 .300WM and after trying it a couple of times (being mindful of technique), recoil is still very stiff, finding it hard to get clusters.

There's a chance of swapping out the rifle for an identical one in 7MM RM or .30-06. I already have a .270 which I very much like, so your opinion matters a lot! I'm gunning for a bigger platform than the .270 to go after Elk/Red Deer/Long distance Muleys.

What say ye???

Saludos from Mexico.

Re: "Time Sensitive" Help Needed - Swap .300WM for .7MM RemMag???
Additional info:
- Max range 600yds
- Still not reloading and relying on factory ammo
- It could be the .7mm or the .30-06, but not both!
- Elk and some African Plains Game as upper weight limit

Gracias!

Yes, if you can't learn to deal with the 300 the 06 is the best factory supported all round cartridge for the body weights out to 600 with care on the bigger bodies.

In saying that the 06 will be still be lively in a lighter weight, mountain outfit running the big pills needed for the range.
Can you test shoot the 06?

I found Steph's Montana in 7mm Rm easy to shoot and it's reasonably light, but having very limited experience with that cal l would stay with Nathans recommendation for body weight & range of the 30 cal.

Martin,
What is the weight of the rifle? What is your intended purpose and use for the rifle?

Can you put some weight on it and some ergonomics and perhaps a muzzle brake if you don't have one?
The 7 REMMAG will have some stout recoil too if you are dealing with very light rifles. Definitely better but not what we could call a light caliber unless you stick to light loads only.

The rifle I'm looking at scales at 7.5lbs unscoped and unloaded (both in .30-06 and .7MM).....

Perhaps this link will lead you to some ideas you could use to help you decide on a rifle or build...

I would personally like the 7mm WSM and have shot one of these in that caliber, and found recoil / comfort level not bad at all, due largely in part to the stock design. (note that I am used to a heavy recoil in some other rifles however) If you are hunting deer out to 600 meters and the odd elk or moose hunt as well, this is a very effective rifle/caliber and in this cartridge would be very close to your 7 pounds before scope. I love the 7mm caliber for the abundance of high quality and selection of bullets for it.

I would highly recommend the new Nightforce 3.5 to 10x42 with zerostop and their illuminated reticle for darker days. Lighter than most of their others and I love mine. Also have a Sightron III S-Tac in 2.5-17.5 x 56 and like it as well, but Sightron should get their illuminated reticles improved a long way...and that scope resides on a heavy .308 model 700p LTR because it is heavy and bulky. For its compactness as well as effectiveness the above NF scope may well be among the very elite hunting scope options. (my opinion)

NF scope should read 2.5-10x42 not 3.5

If you were hand loading, you could download your .300 to 06 speeds, then work up from there. There is nothing to stop you running the 208gr A-Max / ELD at 2600fps or a lighter bullet at mild velocities. So- if you get stuck with this rifle and have access to reloading equipment, do not worry too much.

Also, keep in mind that mild .300 factory loads (eg blue box Federal) will recoil in a similar manner to full power 06 and 7RM hand loads.

Re: "Time Sensitive" Help Needed - Swap .300WM for .7MM RemMag???
Very good points!! I was running 180gr SST Superformance factory loads, so lots of room to come down a bit, and like the books say, "build from there"....I love the idea of the 208gr pill at 2600fps....

It's a lovely rig, wouldn't mind getting stuck with it.

Saludos and will come back with feedback.
