Hello Nathan - do you bed the barrel knox on Savage rifles?

Thanks,

Noah

Re: Bedding For a Savage Rifle
Hi Noah, yes bed the knox but tape of the barrel nut with electrical tape so that it is relieved but not gaping. That or plasticine the nut recesses.

On the regular Savage rifle, the rear action screw sits between the trigger and mag well. No weight is taken at the tang. So with such a short distance between action screws, we need to think about how to support the barreled action, removing any stress from the system, hence the above advice.

Edit:

On the Axis, The rifle must be bedded in a similar manner to the T3 (regarding the recoil lug) but with the trigger mechanism left in place. A blob of bedding can be used at the square ali block in front of the trigger unit, then bed along the sides of the mag well forwards. That or bed from the front of the mag well forwards to play it safe.

Re: Bedding For a Savage Rifle
Note that I have edited my initial post regarding the Savage Axis. Was so tired from work that I got my rifle models mixed up. Thomas's post woke me up. Sorry guys, I have been burning the candle at both ends, helping an engineering firm for the past week. This has placed us under immense pressure.

Below is the bedding procedure for the Ruger American.

Stabilize the stock including the vented section of the stock at the knox. Then bed the barrel knox only (no action bedding) with a small dam behind the knox and normal sized dam in the forend. The fit has to be such that the action is not lifted off its v block. Careful prep and plenty of trial fits are key factors. Once done, it is possible to combine the knox bedding with my glue and screw method from the accurizing book. This also removes any misalignment problems within the V-Block if any mistakes were made.

The action is not designed for traditional bedding, it is a cheap rifle in the extreme so there is no point trying to make it something it's not. But for those who wish to make basic improvements after discovering accuracy problems, the methods I have described can be put to use with success- providing the barrel is up to the task.
