seating depth/coal for 6mm remington

Hi Nathan, Everyone else,

I purchased a 6mm remington earlier this year and I'm having trouble findng a decent load for it. Ive been seating the projectile to the start of the case neck for optimum concentrcity. Im thinking I may seat it out further since im not having much luck with the current setup and with the 6mm having quite a long neck I was thinking of seating it to a depth of .244 - the size of the projectile. This leaves .144"/3.74mm to the case neck. The actions a mauser so theres no concern regarding magazine length or even getting close to the lands - keen to hear everyones thoughts.

Cheers,
Grant

Hi Grant, yes that makes sense. All you have to keep in mind, is that after a period of time, the cases will develop donuts- a brass ring in the case neck where the heel of your bullet was sitting during each ignition.

On its own, this is not a problem, but if for example you later use a longer bullet with a different seating depth or try seating a certain load deeper, the donut ring / hump will be a negative factor- whether relative to alignment, tension or whatever. So in this instance, the easy fix would be fresh brass.

You can check for donut development by running a piece of wire down the inside of the case neck, feeling for a burr.

I've been using a 6mm rem for many years. I'm very happy with 100gn Sierra game kings 44.5gns 2209 powder Federal GM primers Winchester cases @3100fps. Seating depth is 4mm off the lands to fit the mag. Been loading those cases for a long time now! Mine shoots 1/4" groups and kills very well, I've killed a lot of Red deer with that load with no problems. I wouldn't recommend it as a Red calibre but place your shots well and it'll do the job.

Cheers Bob,

Thats a good speed you've got going on with the 100gr and fantastic grouping!! What length tube are you running? and is it a facory rifle or a custom one?

I'm hoping I get onto a decent enough load soon - Its been my worst ever rifle for finding a load for. I've only tried two projectiles - but they're ones I'm happy with in terms of performance - 95gr partition and 85gr Sierra HPBT. I loaded a few more up last night so will test them next weekend. Will post the results once I've done the testing. A weak link in my reloading process maybe the brass. I'm using factory hornady brass - I'm not a fan of it as I think it's too soft.

Cheers,
Grant

It's a custom build on a Remington model 7 action, 24" Maddco barrel, McMillan stock. The mags a bit short hence the 4mm of the lands. I can fit one cartridge in the top of the mag & one up the spout if loading to the lands but I don't bother. I've used most projectiles but settled on the 100gn Game Kings. I used Hornady 87gn boat tail hollow points for a long time, very accurate but got massive meat damage on Fallow and full length penetration. The 87gner's were great for culling dogs.
Cheers
Bob
