Mark WhitakerI am contemplating a projectile for short range (5 to 150 yards) pig hunting, dual loading with the A-Max for everything else. From reading the database what you be the better projectile? 150gr Partition 154gr SST 175gr Hornady SP or RN Or just use the 162gr A-Max Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thomas KitchenRe: 7mm-08 Short range Pigshi marki have just brought a box of partitions for 270win yet to try them but one thing that surprised me on the box for best velocity is has no max velocity ( guess you'll never get surface blow up) i would give the partitions ago it seems the only thing people don't like about them is the price |

Nathan FosterRe: 7mm-08 Short range PigsHi Mark, I have found the A-Max to excel on pigs at 7mm-08 velocities. That mild velocity is the key.Beyond this, if you want to experiment for the hell of it then go for it. Try a Partition for kicks. If you have never used these bullets, this would be a good opportunity. |

Mark WhitakerRe: 7mm-08 Short range PigsThanks, it seems the 7mm-08 and 162gr A-Max is a match made in heaven. |

Mike DavisRe: 7mm-08 Short range Pigsdevils advocate here......I shoot pigs to eat them. bullet damage is a necessary evil but why get anymore than absolutely necessary??? head/neck shots are first choice but not always on the cards. if range is short wouldnt a tsx or ttsx be a better bet??? seems to me that what makes a bullet great at range is the opposite of what you want in close for a eating porker???? shot a weaner pig with .223 using 45grn taipan hp projectile (were after wallabies)...yes very quick kill even from rear angle in hole through flank and no out hole but what a mess in between...seems to me a highly frangible 7mm projectile could end up putting you in similar boat???? |

Nathan FosterRe: 7mm-08 Short range PigsThat is quite true Mike.I tend to be very picky with shots when meat hunting, using the A-Max for head shots which is very effective. Head shooting pigs with a frangible bullet of sufficient weight and momentum tends to be less problematic than shooting deer which when the neck is craned on lean / light deer, makes for a very small target area whether head or neck shooting. So there are a few ways to approach this. All I wanted to reiterate in my initial post is that although Mark is using a soft projectile, this particular combination does produce adequate penetration on boar if he wants to stick with one load. And yes, the Corelokt can be great to work with also. |
