Which 270 Winchester Factory Load for Tikka Superlight 22 1/2 Barrel ?

Wll be using a 130 grain Factory load
Ranges say 35 yards to 250 yards,300 max

Federal Fusion 130 grains
Federal Partition 130 grains
Federal Power shok(blue box)130 grain,(I think this is the Speer Hotcore)
Federal Ballistic tip 130 Grains
Barnes Vortex TTSX 130 Grains

Deer size 150 to 250 LBS (250 being a BIG deer in my hunting area)Average 175 to 200 for a good buck .

I am a shoulder shooter .

Can one load do it all or would dual loading be recommended?

Ps I have already read the knowledge Base and Nathans Cartridge book.
I am still confuzzled !

Also for those who have used them what do you think of the 5 round Magazines as opposed to the 3 rounders?
Does the 5 rounders materially affect the Carrying and ballance of the Rifle?

Thanks
Craig

Craig, I have been playing with this caliber a ton lately. I have a 270 Remington Mtn light weight setup somewhat similar to yours. It loves the Hornady 140 SST. Shooting .607 groups at 100 yards. I don't shoot factory ammo very often but after getting pretty discouraged hand loading. I figured to try something new. I did this same thing with my Wife's 6.5 creedmoor and got .404 groups with Hornady 140 amax factory ammo. My point being, try the hornady stuff, I was simply amazed at the level of performance from them.

Hi Craig, you will need to try a couple of loads to see what the rifle likes. The Partition would be nice to try- a good hunting load. The straight blue box load is OK but it does lose its punch after 275 yards and is reliant on bone for very fast killing.

Also, keep an eye out for Hornady 140gr SST Superformance ammo. The Tikka rifles often shoot this ammo extremely well. If you are going to be keeping inside 300 yards, the 130gr Interbond Superformance load is another good option.

Pick two or three loads and see what the rifle likes best.

Re: Which 270 Winchester Factory Load for Tikka Superlight 22 1/2 Barrel ?
hi craig i got same rifle i get good grouping with hornady whitetail (interlock) and sst superformance in 130grain dont think they had 140grain at shop. i shot a goat with the white tail load at 300 metres it went down quick enough but dont no if i would use those on deer any where past that distance ( might be fine was use to nailing goats with 303 at close range so different effect ) i have trouble finding 150grain factory ammo here, the 150grain federal fusion is normally available which im guessing would be similar performance to hot cor bullets? partitions or sst would be good place to start if they shoot well in your rifle

I am going to put either a Leupold VX1 3 9x40 or a Leupold VX2 on it,I haven,t made up my mind if the VX2 is worth the extra $75.00 or so for me.

I have used a leupold 2 7 rifleman on a Ruger 10 22 to hunt gray squirrels .
from the break of day till after the sun goes down it has been plenty clear and bright enough.

I know the VX2 is a better scope but the VX1 may be good enough.
After all I am not going to do any scope adjustments in the field.

Just set it 1.5 to 2 inches high at a Hundred and thats it.
Set and forget.

Just decided that the VX1 was at least as good optically as the rifleman I have used that is clear and bright sooo Just ordered a VX1 3 9x40 !

Nothing wrong with the old VX1. Good eye relief too.

I discovered the other day my VX1 has movable ring on scope turrents so when it sighted in I move ring to zero and can dial away from there and be able to return it to zero..not that Im a dialup kind of guy as dont own a rangefinder unless the 60 year old two picture merging type is counted.

Nathan I am giving serious thought to using a dual loading for this rifle to get the best performance at all ranges.

What about either the Barnes Vortex 130 Grain TTSX or Federal Fusion 130 grain for the woods where shots will be under 100 yards ?
Then when I want to hunt in the fields I just change Magazines to a load better suited to good expansion such as maybe the Federal 130 Grain with either the Sierra Game king or Ballistic tip for ranges of 100 to 300 yards?

I really dont want to use the Hornady Superformance as I am just shooting out to 300 yards with this combo And because of the light weight (7 1/4 pounds with lightweight nylon webbing for sling,Leupold VX1 3 to9x40 scope,5 round magazine and 5 rounds of ammo, ready to go)
I can take the recoil but feel like I will shoot better with less recoil than the Superformance gives.

Which 130 grain Factory load would you be more inclined to choose for the woods (less than 100 yard)deer hunting
Which 130 grain(100 to 300 yard, leaveing out the Superformance AMMO)?
Assuming of course similar POI and good accuracy.

Thanks
Craig

Re: Which 270 Winchester Factory Load for Tikka Superlight 22 1/2 Barrel ?
Well, the Vortex should be quite fine to 300 yards and remove the need for a dual load. The TTSX bullet has a reasonable hollow point. The Partition we talked about earlier would also work well as an allrounder- excelling out long. I don't see any great need to dual load unless you are wanting something for zero to 300 yard yard shooting versus 300 to 650 yard shooting. But even then, I may select an allrounder when using the .270- unless we are talking large heavy animals and a need for heavy bullet loads in close.

I would still like you to atleast try the SF ammo, you may be surprised.

If I had to pick one factory load, it would (sorry to say) perhaps be one of the SF loads we have discusssed.

But again, you will need to see what the rifle likes.

Were you not able to obtain the Federal 130gr Partition load- that would be another great performer for 0-300.

Re: Which 270 Winchester Factory Load for Tikka Superlight 22 1/2 Barrel ?
Hi Nathan
I didn,t want to get anything before I made up my mind whether to dual load or not .
Consultation stage !
Besides with the weather we have been having,Rain ,sleet and snow I am not going to be out testing loads.
Afraid my shaking and shivering wouldn,t give either the rifle or ammo a fair skake . Pun Intended !

My big game is strictly Whitetail deer with a Big Buck running 250 pounds(average 175 to 200 pounds)

I know I can get the Vortex ammo ,and probably The Partition Load locally at a Sportsmans Warehouse Store(where I bought the Rifle).

I will be going Past the store this next week and will definitly Pick up a Box of the Vortex 130 grains to try and a box of the Federal 130 grain Partitions to try if they have them.

I have a little experience with the Vortex Ammo out of a 243 Winchester using the 85 Grain TTSX 1 inch 3 shot groups at a hundred out of a Remington 7600 Pump rifle ! Worked good on deer as well.

I have no experience with the Partitions.
I have always heard 2 things about the Partitions
One is they arent normally arent extreemly accurate and the other that they are great game bullets.

Now that was 40 years ago I was hearing about the accuracy issue too!

Thanks again Nathan
Trust Life is treating you well

Cannot vouch for the .270 Partitions Craig but the 30 cal 180's run very nice groups in 3 different brand rifles. Moa and better, without fuss when handloading.

Norma were always good loads. never had a issue with them other than price and kick..they hot enough to be fast.
