Tikka T3 rifle questions

Craig Henard

I just bought a Tikka T3 Superlight 270 Winchester
Going to try it out as a general purpose deer rifle for the times I am hunting in the woods and possible out to 300 yards in the fields.

I know a number of people recomend changing scope mounts but I am going to try the factory mounts first.

I see the front ring has a recoil stud that mates with the hole in the dovetail on the rifle.

Does the recoil stud on the front ring go toward the muzzle end of rifle or towards the butt end?(ie is the thick part of the ring placed behind the stud or in front of it )

What do I need to torque these Tikka factory ring caps to?
What about the ring bases to the dovetail on the rifle?

I took the Barreled action out of the stock to have a look see and to adjust the trigger.
Trigger would just go down to 2 1/4 pounds before it touches the bolt that holds the trigger assembly onto action so I took the bolt out and filed the front of the trigger adjustment screw so I could back it out more.
got it set at 1 3/4 now . Nice

I read in one of Nathans books to torque the stock bolt to 35 inch pounds
Does that hold true for both the front and back ?

Thanks
Craig

Hi Craig, yes, set both action screws in this manner. The book has ring torqque settings. No need to go higher as you are running ali and this binds up if you go too heavy.

Warwick- is your rifle a 75 or 85. I thought it was a 75 when I gave it the once over. Hope it hasn't morphed into an 85! I can't remember now. Unless you threw the recoil lug away (mental picture of the Swedish chef on the Muppets) then it probably would pass as an 85.

Oh- and push the rings forwards Craig- very important.

I just didn,t know if the cheapo aluminum Scope rings and screws would take that kind of torque without stripping.

Re: Tikka T3 rifle questions
Craig - I would advise caution with those aluminum screws - they are really soft. I stripped out two when I went to remove a scope awhile back and had to drill them out. I had not tightened them beyond Nathan's recommendation. They were just too damn soft.

Thanks,
Maybe I need to go to the hardware store and get some hardened screws ?

Re: Tikka T3 rifle questions
Sorry- meant to say the rings were too soft. The screws are regular ring screw temper. The trouble is, ali binds easily.

Re: Tikka T3 rifle questions
Hi Craig, if you want to play it safe, you can set to 20 inch-lb. That will ensure that any differences in torque drivers do not result in problems.

Do not use Loctite, the ali is self locking.

Hi Nathan it has the lug and you said it was the good one so it's a 75 . When I bought it the bloke said it was the 85. What are the go to stocks for the Sako?

OK Nathan 20 Inch pounds for the ring tops(wheeler engineering torque wrench)

How much on base screws of the rings which attach to the dovetail of the rifle?

Thanks

Re: Tikka T3 rifle questions
For you Warwick, I would recommend the McMillan Sako 75 Safari. It can be inletted to accept a varmint contour barrel, the pitch is much like a Remington SPS but with a medium width forend.

One of our forum members Chris Murphy has been experimenting with his own (self made) varmint / tactical stock and also found a similar design in Oz made by Bolly Aviation (Bolly finishes look too slippery though, would need to order something a bit rougher). I have no first hand experience with Bolly.

Bearing in mind your current stock is quite sufficient, especially for the 6.5x55. Any change would be personal.

There are possibly others out there. I have not checked in on Wild Dog stocks (Oz) for a while. They make a nice non bulky A5 style stock for Tikka rifles.

Craig- you can run with 20 inch-lb on the cross screws. They are going into ali again so you can't go too heavy. 25 inch-lb max.

Sorry- Warwick, I think McMillan will also inlet their M40 A1 stock to 75 specs. This is their HTG stock.

have given the prototype a good work out and am very pleased with it.
now going to make a mold off it and start making a few. my plan is to sell them as a blank for the DIY user to inlet and bed with Nathans products.
my goal weight finished is 6-700g.
Im also going to have a play with making an alloy one.
