6.5x55 M96 mauser loads.

Hi all.

I realise every rifle is different and some can handle higher pressures than others etc but what sort of velocity can be reasonably and safely extracted from an M96 mauser using 140gn nosler hpbt projectiles and 2209 powder? The Adi and Nick Harvey reloading manuals promote maximum loads much lower than what is suggested here. I realise they must err on the side of safety given the age of these rifles. I also realise that loads should be worked up looking for pressure signs. I'm very interested to hear your thoughts. My rifle is a Carl Gustoff made in 1915 all matching numbers and has the full length long barrel.

Cheers.

Hi there, about 2750fps is the norm / average.

I do not like to see the Swede underloaded as it can be an unethical killer if loaded too soft and used past moderate ranges. So as you have suggested, I prefer to carefully work up loads.

That sort of pressure can be handled safely by an M96?

I had a lot of luck with AR2213sc in my M96 load was 45.0 grains and a Lapua Scenar it would shoot the ten ring out of a 100 metre NZDA target, I never chronographed it just work up from 43.0 until I got the best group,
It's a great calibre I had 7 at one time all shot great.

Hi Jason, yes, those are just normal velocities and comfortable pressures for the Swede. The rifles max out at just over 2820 to 2850fps. Having said that, my 1923 rifle has a sweet spot at 2820fps. But for the most part, I suggest 2750fps as optimal. Cases last forever, barrels just keep on going and going.

A friend / client had an action rupture at between 3120 and 3190fps as far as best as I can calculate (a hand loader gave him a load with fast burning powder by accident). No injuries fortunately.

You have to remember that Kimber made their debut by rebarreling and reworking the old Swedes to .243 and .308.

I put my metallurgy notes in the reloading book. I put my load notes in the cartridges book.

Hi Robert, velocities for your rifle would have been around 2500fps based on my research with 2213sc in various mil rifles.

Thanks for that. I'm glad I wasn't holding that rifle! !

It's amazing how much the adi reloading book goes under those figures. Good to know.

Nothing wrong with the ADI book- they have to take scale errors into account and so forth. I went through all of this in the reloading book.
