New brass - neck expansion

Just trying to clear something up in my head.

I have a box of new Lapuna .308 for a 700 build.

I picked up some Wilson Dies - the neck sizer and bullet seater.

For the first load (to start fire forming) - do I need to worry about neck expansion - or can I just neck size to deal with any dings and go from there?

Read multiple different opinions online on this one already.

Not shore what you mean by worrying about neck expansion Kerry, but l have found my 308 Lapua cases very uniform and great to work with.

I tried neck sizing (turning) and uniforming primer pockets but l could not see any noticeable difference with groups in my factory barrelled Rem or Tikka. It may be more pronounced with custom barrels/chambers.
I just neck size for repeatability and start fire forming/preliminary load development, which has worked well in all my rifles.

Re: New brass - neck expansion
The Wilson die's have no expansion ball in it. Long term I understand this is good - as I will just be working the neck sizing to get the right tension.

However - for the first 'setup' of the brass - I have also read the either full length sizing, or at least a run through something with a ball/mandrel will just remove any dents/dings and so on the brass may have in it.

Been that it is Lapua brass - I am not really expecting any issues - but ya-know - just learning best practice and all...

Hi Kerry, I think in this instance, just work with what you have. Seat boat tail bullets to remove any initial dings. It won't make any difference.

Sometimes you get a really bad batch of brass (not Lapua) and the dings are so bad that the brass folds over if the inner case neck has not been expanded. But generally you will get away with it.

Hi Kerry
I use Lapua brass & bushing dies with no mandrel. If you measure the outside diameter of the neck sized case then again with a bullet seated, that'll tell you how much neck tension you have. Lapua brass is a bit thicker than most. I skim the neck with a K&M neck turner after using they're case neck expander tool https://www.kmshooting.com/catalog/case-neck-expanding-tools/expand-iron_complete.html
to true everything up and get the desired neck tension.

Cheers guys.

Yeah - boat tails. The brass all looks good, as it should.

Neck turning is on the books - but a little down the line. I need to get my shooting up to spec first... ;)

Hi Kerry
Measure the neck diameter of a fired case and the neck a loaded round to see how much clearance you have on the neck. I only skim the necks to make them consistent thickness.
