Varget load for the 7x57 using a Hornady 162 A-Max bullet

My favorite gun store finally got some Hodgdon Varget rifle powder.
Using Nathan's suggestion I am reloading with a Hornady 162 A-Max
bullet, but none of my reloading manuals list a Varget charging load for
this bullet.
Can any one suggest a load for Varget powder. This will be used
to hunt elk here in eastern Washington state. My shots will
be under 300 yards, probably a lot closer. Thanks

Hi John;

Sometimes we moss the easiest way!! Hodgon provides reloading data in his web: http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

For the 160 partition, win case, 3,0" col, they list to stary at 33, maximun at 35. You have somewhere to start! Good luck with your tests!

Hi John, am so sorry for the late reply. I keep finding myself behind at the moment while at the same time am also trying to take some time off work.

1 fouler @ 40 grains
40gr x 3
40.5 x 3
41 x 3
41.5 x 3
42 x 3
42.5 x 3
43 x 3

Observe cases, observe targets. Decide on whether it is safe to pursue load work to 44 grains. Or, if partial sweet spot found, work around sweet spot in .2 grain increments.

Remember to set your COAL for optimum concentricity- not close to the lands. See COAL article in rifle accuracy section of the KB or see my current book- reloading.

Thank you Nathan. The first day it gets up to 40degrees F. I will begin
searching for that sweet spot. I will follow your advice about not being
too close to the lands. I have ordered your reloading book and am
anxious to get into it. John
