hi nathan,
iv been reading your barrel brake-in article and have a couple of questions.
i didnt see you mention using the correct size brush. do you think they are too harsh?
i see what your doing with a worn down brush, wrapping the brush with cloth. can you recomend a good size new brush to use on the 7mm, as i dont have a worn one.
i was told meths neutralizes bore solvent, do you think there is any truth to this?

Hi Jason, a .257" brush will do the trick to begin with as a rag holder for your 7mm bore.

Full diameter bronze brushes are fine, they can really get in and work out the copper. If you have one, use it until it is worn, then use it as a rag jag.

Yes, Meths will neutralize both alkali and acid based solvents. Brake cleaner on a jag rag is also good for removing all traces of solvents from a bore. Just be aware that both meths and brake cleaner will dry the bore so be sure to re-apply preservative coatings if putting the rifle into storage or lubricating coatings prior to shooting. The further along I go in this game, the more I am inclined to shoot over a lube rather than a dry bore. Am still using graphite in stainless bores as a dry lube.

There used to be a product here in NZ, one I miss very much called Militech 1. This is still sold in the states, should be no problem to get online anywhere in the world. It was a good lube, bonded to the steel and allowed the user to shoot over it and it stayed put during shooting while preventing corrosion on 3-4 day hunts with blued steel rifles, also minimizing any severe fouling. There was a velocity increase though, so anyone doing long range reading this, will have to re-chrony and re-correct charts by around 30fps or more. Gun Juice is another new lube, though I have not looked into it too closely yet.
