Max barrel contour standard Tikka t3 stock

Time to rebarrel my T3 currently a 22,250 & planning to go 6mm bench rest as a cheap to run varmint / long range practice rifle.

How heavy a contour will the standard T3 stock handle if stabilised and fully bedded?

I'm looking at using a #4 contour shilen and 24 inch length as will use a suppressor but don't want too go much shorter and loose velocity. I've read the pro and cons on suppressor and basically need one to not annoy land owners. Contour gives .650 at 26inch so will be only slightly > at 24inches?

Due to heat from suppressor would of liked to go a bit heavier in barrel but figure may overload T3 stock when suppressor added and run out of barrel channel width. But also on the flip side going for more weight may give slighter longer shot strings but also a longer time to cool. Most shooting will be drive around varmiting on wallabies and hares

Hi Dave, I believe you will be just able to get away with the contour you mentioned. This contour is similar to the traditional Sako rifles of old. A degree of stock material will have to be removed but you can sand or disc at say 45- 60 degrees rather than widening the entire channel.

The contour you mentioned will be ample for the 6mm. The old Ruger M77 .25-06 rifles were much the same- a semi varmint contour.

Another option would be to send the rifle directly to True-Flite and have them fit a barrel to suit with concern of your needs. They can open the stock channel and ascertain what will fly.

A Boyds stock is yet another option. This will allow you to adopt a full varmint contour if need be.

If you are not shooting really long heavy strings, there is no need for too much contour. But yes, it will be good to have some contour for the suppressor. The latest Dan hardy units have forwards vents to further help cooling.

"If you get a chance Marty, could you please measure the diameter of your barrel at the 12" mark, then at the muzzle. I want to try and give Dave an idea of potential barrel diameters for his T3 rifle with regards to his post. Sorry to add to your job list. "

My T3 Lite 9.3x62 measures .725 @ 12" & .640 at the muzzle.
As you have said Nathan the Boyds has heaps of room to open up for a full contour.

Cheers Marty
