223 rebarrel

I am going to have my Tikka M55 222 rebarreled to 223 1:8 twist. It will be used by by my son as well, who only ways 25kg ringing wet, so weight is one of the factors I am considering. I was thinking of a contour of about 0.7'' muzzle diameter(I will use muzzle diameter as contour numbers don't seem to have a standard) and 22'' in length. I gather from Nathan's book I shouldn't lose too much from a 22'' barrel.
Should this contour do the job for some decent strings?
Just wanting to start dabbling in some longer range stuff. Next project will be an old Howa 22-250 into a 7mm-08.
My son shoots quite well, about 0.5 MOA with the 222, 22-250 and a little more with the 6.5x55, only because it isn't as accurate.
Any ideas or advice welcome.
Cheers,
Woody.

Re: 223 rebarrel
Hi Wayne, .700 will be plenty at 22". Recoil will be extremely low. It may be a bit hefty for the lad to tote but he will love it all the same. We had a gun bearer in the hills last week, a 12 year old lad, carrying an M700 varmint with 26" barrel at around .800 or so at the muzzle- but in .308 which does cut the weight down with the larger bore diameter. Any chance to carry- he took it.

Re: 223 rebarrel
Got carried away bragging about my boy and forgot some questions. Do I go with standard chamber dimensions or make allowances for the long projectiles and is it imperative to true the action? I was speaking to an older gunsmith that may do the job and he said he has never trued an M55 as they are pretty good. Said he has rebarreled hudreds of them.
Barrel I was planning on getting was Maddco, TSE or True Flite if not too much trouble. Opinions?

Re: 223 rebarrel
Your M55 will be fine, your gunsmith is correct.

The standard chamber dimensions will make for a long COAL if you are wanting to run A-Max bullets. However, COAL is not the problem. The big problem is that the A-Max, when seated to run at mag length, can end up with the ogive in the case neck. If you can get the mag length right, the SAAMI standard chamber will be ideal.

If you have a plastic magazine, it may need altering. I can walk you through this later if need be, unless you want to go with Delta tactical bottom metal. Just need to make sure that I am on the same page as you as I am prone to forget back models of Tikka. The bottom metal (plastic) should in essence be the same as the Tikka T3 unless your rifle came out prior to this design. Please correct me if I am wrong. COAL's can be found in my second book if you have a copy of it.

Getting a True-Flite is no problem as it can be sent as a blank without chamber reaming and is therefore not yet a gun part. You can buy this direct. Ask for a machine lapped barrel as per the description I gave in the Accurizing book. These barrels are exceptional.

Re: 223 rebarrel
Thanks Nathan, just what I wanted to hear. The M55 is the older model with metal magazine. 75mm total internal dimensions with blocks shortening it back to 58mm for the 222, so I shouldn't have too much problem modifying it.

And yes, I have all your books, best investment I've made in a long time. Had to get them in ebook as well, so I didn't have to wait for the books to start studying.
