Help me make up my mind !

Heres My dillema,I can buy a used Remington 700 SPS Blued 26 inch barrel for $350.00 or a Remington 700 SPS Stainless 26inch barrel for $650.00.

Everything including the bore looks good on the used blue rifle.
Still I dont have a bore scope to tell for sure.

Both rifles are 7mm Remington Magnum.

I know this is a trivial question but just looking for some input before I make up my mind.

I am only 54 you know !!LOL

Buy both. Sell the blued rifle for $500. Win win. Where can you pick up an SPS for $350?

Re: Help me make up my mind !
Thanks Scott

One of those friend of a friends thing!
Goodness I had no idea it would be worth $500.00 used !
Sounds like at $350.00 I,m getting a heckof a deal !

Had one of the blued several years ago and regretted getting rid of it.
Guess whichever one(or both) I get I will need to chunk the trigger and get a Timney.
And maybe one of the Boyds Laminate stock to give it a little more heft to hold steadier and reduce rifle jump.

Thanks for your input
Craig

Re: Help me make up my mind !
you may not like my opinion Craig but I'm going to give it,

both are over priced, a new shillen chrome molly is about $200 ozzie and the match grade hand lapped stainless shillen are about $290, both in what ever you like contour, cal and twist.
I have just had a #6 match grade stainless sent to my door for $375 ozzie,
I went through a supplier as I don't know how to get export permits from the us, so he was part of the cost as well,

I will be getting the barrel chambered, threaded, the action trued and lugs ect done for a cost of around $400 but at the end of it I will have a better rifle,

procal in bannockburn victoria Australia sells brand new unused chrome molly rem barrels for $200 as he take's them off new remmy's to use the action for a rebuild for his customer's,

IMHO it would be cheaper for you to buy one off peter at procal and get it sent to you,

just my opinion, get the price down Craig

regards mark

Re: Help me make up my mind !
About 8 or 9 years ago I imported a rifle into NZ from the US. I used Leroys Big Valley Gun Works in the US. No doubt they will be googleable. It was easy to do, just took time. No idea if US laws have changed anything about the process.

Re: Help me make up my mind !
Hi Craig, please check the trigger guard on your rifle to see if it is made of plastic or ali. If it is plastic, it will need to be replaced with an ali guard as the plastic guards splay and it is difficult to obtain obtain a set torque setting. The ADL is a budget model rifle. It may need a good deal of work to get it shooting accurately. You can over time change it to BDL configuration if you prefer- BDL bottom metal and a Boyds stock etc.

Re: Help me make up my mind !
I checked and it has the plastic guard and yes it is cracked.
Guess I will Replace it with a Aluminum or steel guard.
May just sell it and get either a Remington 700 SPS Stainless in 7mm Mag or a Remington Sendero ,dont know about the fluted barrel on the Sendero though. Will it be as accurate as a barrel without flutes ?

Re: Help me make up my mind !
Hi Craig, the Sendero barrels can be very accurate. Again, use book 1 to assist you with this process.

Re: Help me make up my mind !
Thanks Nathan ,I had read on Page 71 what you had said about having gone off the idea. And then on page 75 the very last of the key points is to refrain from fluting anything less than a full Varmint contour.

This leads me to think that only the Full varmint contour can get away with being fluted ??

IF I interpreted that correctly I think I will stick to round unfluted barrels !!
Less to be concerned about it seems to me.

Thanks again Nathan

Re: Help me make up my mind !
Hi Craig,

What l took out of Nathans book (&phone calls) is;

There is nothing wrong with fluting on a medium to heavy barrell dependent on cal. (wall thickness!)
When getting a barrel made depending on budget, possibly the extra money could be better spent on better optics, triggers, smithing etc.

I have a Rem 300wm Police & wish it had the Sendero fluted barrel!
I have just bedded a friends new Sendero and the small weight savings in the barrel fluting & stock do make a noticable differance when carrying in the field. Comparing the 2 mine is nose heavy to carry.

Hope that helps Marty
