Ask the Expert

Hi Guys, I am to host an ask the expert column for NZ guns magazine (wonder how long I can cope with the extra work). To get the ball rolling, they will need questions. Once these initial questions are posed, the column will be set in motion and magazine readers can then direct questions to the magazine by email or letter. It is just this first issue that needs a start up.

So, if you can think of any questions, please email me and put Ask the expert as the subject or some smart assed variation of this title to give me a giggle. Nothing too over the top in the way of questions please (how do I bed a...How do I convince my wife that she must bed rifles as a part of our marriage agreement), its been a hectic few weeks. A bullet recommendation perhaps. I don't know, have a crack.

May be best if the emails come from NZ or Oz readers. That said, I am sure a couple of "from John, Oregon" would not go a miss.

Ok, now that I heave dealt myself the workload death blow, I will leave you to ponder. I will send your answers back to you by email and then cut and paste to populate the magazine column.

Re: Ask the Expert
ok, well against good advice I was in Hamilton in my best camo, and a cougar latched on to me..... should I have played dead then once it was asleep cut my arm off with my bowie knife....

but seriously.... the readers will be lucky to have you on board.
in the magazine are you the long range expert or just anything gun related?

Re: Ask the Expert
Try wearing Warehouse gumboots instead of the classier Red Bands which could make you appear as being up for grabs and give the wrong message.

Anything will do, same as these forums.

Re: Ask the Expert
redbands, I thought they might be too much for Hamilton.

well for me personally, you have already helped so much I don't really have anything to ask.
its more of a case of taking everything in.

I really liked the you tube video of you talking at reloaders a while ago, that's something id go to. even if nothing else but to have a beer afterwards.

Re: Ask the Expert, where X = the unknown and Spurt is a drip under pressure
here's one for you

I'm hand loading my own 7mm Rem Mag. My bullet of choice is 154gr SST and powder is 74gr of 2217, gives me 3070ft/sec at 5m from the muzzel. Is my choice of primer important in the scheme of things. Important for precision, repeatability and accuracy.

Re: Ask the Expert
Another one:

The more firings a case has, is it likely going to change your load dynamics in terms of POI. So will my POI from a case that's been fired eight times be the same as one from the first firing?

Also maybe a little intro on whats actually involved in LR shooting and that it's not as easy as what people think it is. I feel too many people take shots at game without confidentially knowing they'll drop it. Just a pet peave of mine.

Re: Ask the Expert
After connecting with a deer and field dressing it on
the ground (no trees) I get it back to camp as quickly
as possible. Then I hang it, skin and wash it inside and
outside and put a game
bag over it. I hang it head up, but some other hunters
hand their deer head down. Does it make a difference?

Re: Ask the Expert
Hi Nathan,
I sent you the question in response to your request for
questions to use with your new NZ program. I really didn't
expext an answer, but appreciate it anyway. Because I
have to drag my deer through dusty grass to get to my
truck I only open it up just enough to get the guts and
blood out. Splitting the hind quarters and getting the
wind pipe out takes place after I get back to camp and
the deer is hanging. I will go easier on the water after
reading your E-mail. Thanks.

Re: Ask the Expert
No worries John.

I will close this up now thanks. Had enough mail to get the column going and then some. If the column is still lagging a bit when the next bi-monthly issue is due, I will post for help again.

All the best guys! Good team work.

Re: Ask the Expert
Dear Nathan,
Can you tell you please tell me what's wrong in my shooting technique if I get horizontal groups 3" wide and 0.5" high at 100 metres. I'm shooting a 7mm Remington Magnum in a Remington SPS with light weight Bell & Carlsen stock. I get 0.4" and less sized groups with my 22-250.

Thank you
