A collector from across the pond.

I have been reading and researching at this site for a while. Nathan, kudos to you for taking the time and sharing your knowledge. Basically what I have read mirrors what I have seen in 40 years of hunting. I read Jack O'Conner and Elmer Keith's writing in the sports rags during the 60's. I guess you could say I fall in the O'Conner camp. I use the 270 for just about everything here in NY. As a reloader, I've always loaded for accuracy. Shots in NY are generally under 300 yds with Whitetail deer and Black bear being the predominate species. The deer may run as high as 250 lb on the hoof and the bear could go 600 lb with the average falling in the 200 lb range. Our vermin species would be wood chucks or Coyotes. I rather envy you NZ folk with all those 4 legged critters.
My other firearms are the 7mm08, 257 Bob, 264 mag, 7mm mag, 220 swift and a 223. My custom rifles are the 264 which was built on a Sako action and the 270 which is a Ruger #1. I am looking for something in the 30 cal range.

My choice of weapons on deer however is a bow. My closest killing was around 10 feet away. That gets your blood pumping. I pride myself on getting close.

Looking forward to getting my two books. Always had a thirst for gun knowledge. Isn't a day go by where I don't learn something.

Re: A collector from across the pond.
Thanks Shawn, glad you are enjoying the site and I hope you find the books useful.

If you ever feel up for it, I would appreciate any bow hunting autopsy photos (you can email them straight through to me). These will help site readers when studying mechanical wounding versus high velocity disproportionate to caliber wounding. It also helps tie the past with the present.
