Throat condition

Dear All,
Haenel Jager 9, 3006, goes from 1 inch to 2 (at 100m) in 8-9 shots after good clean. Sako hammer head 180 grain ammo. It is a break action not a bolt. How would you rate the pictures (I hope they came trough :)) of the throat, there seem to be quite a few rough machine marks and land taper/ramp edges do not seem to be very crisp either. Pictures show throat after 12 shots.
Many thanks in advance !
Maciej

Re: Throat condition
Hi Maciej, I may be mistaken due to optical effects, but this one appears interesting due to the fact that the leade (beginning of lands) is showing as much erosion as the case mouth transition.

The leade does however appear to be short (again I might be mistaken) but of a harsh angle. It looks almost as if somebody employed unique geometry rather than SAAMI spec. It would be interesting to obtain some max OAL's from this chamber to help determine whether this is just an optical effect.

I would hazard a guess that there is room to recut the throat without making the OAL too long, but the steel may be very hard now.

The erosion at the leade is not unusual. It can however be reduced to some degree via the routine polishing methods in my Accurizing book. I do not want to go into this here as I already give away enough for free.

It is difficult to attribute your accuracy issues to the bore without having it in hand. If the barrel cannot be floated, it is just as likely that the barrel or stock are shifting with changes in temperature, even slight changes. If you can achieve 3 good shots with a break open, put the rifle away for a week and then do the same the next week, maintaining the same POI, you have a fairly good rifle.

I cannot see any issues with machining. All that I can see in the photos, is some erosion which could be attended to via maintenance. This and the possibility of the leade being somewhat short and or steep - which I may be wrong about.

Re: Throat condition
Many thanks Nathan, thank you for your time and directions. I have all your books and two videos (which I followed on my rem 700 300 wsm project with attached result).
With longer 208 eldms the group is not as good (arround .5 inch) which I am still working on, maybe a 9:1 inch twist may help ?
As a mechanical engineer and noob rifle man, I find your non bs style of explaining issues and approaches very easy to follow and can not thank you enough for providing these services/knowledge. Many thanks and will put all the gear and readings I already have to work to maintain the rifle. I bought the haenel jager rifle in excellent condition and put around 50 shots through it, fyi.
Kindest Regards
Maciej

Re: Throat condition
Sorry, correction the eldm group in 300 wsm is about 0.75 inch.

Re: Throat condition
Maciej, if you try Natan’s polishing method, could you please post pictures of that same land showing the results? It would be interesting to see the extent to which a problem like that can be alleviated by hand polishing. Also, if you do post results, avoid describing the process in detail. I made that mistake recently when I recommenced to a guy that he try polishing a chamber to alleviate tight case feed and extraction problems. Nathan rightly wants to limit the details of his trade secrets to those who have purchased the books and videos.

Re: Throat condition
Hi Maciej, thanks for your kind words and the photo feedback, that was a wonderful result with the .300WSM.

Yes, I think both the WSM and .30-06 could make use of the 9 twist with regards to the heavy pills, without placing excessive stress on the jackets.

Thanks again.
