Caveat Emptor - I bought a medium action by mistake (new production M70).

I ought to have done a while ago (arguably at the store, as advised in a certain book series...), but finally got around to measuring the magazine box on my ~2018 production Winchester M70 .30-06 Super Grade.

Max COL: 3.4 inches.

Mostly I came out at 3.990 inches. The mag box is matched by the action, of course, which means I'm not getting more than 3.4 without machining metal out of the action, re-inleting the stock and getting a longer magazine box.

Probably a great fit for the .284 / x55 series cases. It might work well for some F-Class guys I've seen loading near that COL, but no one I know runs a M70 for that. Unfortunately, that's a poor choice for the ever trusty .30-06.

To my embarrassment, I didn't even notice until I tried to load the rifle with some 208 ELD-M loaded near the lands.

Indeed... felt like a right dunce when I figured it out.

I think it's page 60... I was going through the guide again "Oh, crap, here comes Nathan with his verniers..."

Sage advice. What's the saying about failing to learn from others? Oof.

Slower than I've a right to be. My dad once told me "Dave, for a smart guy, you do some pretty dumb shit..."

Sent that rifle to a new home this morning, in fact. A southern gent here was happy to add it to his collection. I sure hope I learned something, because that rifle cost me more than a quarter of classes' tuition at college...

I'm kicking myself over a Tikka at the moment now that my M70 is out of the way. Yet another medium action. I told myself it would be great for running the Sherman Max series... and recently I realized that I was an utter dolt for setting myself up to run a caliber I can't buy factory ammo for.

I had a R700 Senedero SFII once upon a time... bought on the advice of a certain Kiwi as corroborated by some folks on this side of the pond. I suppose I could get a R700 5R in .300 Win Mag and keep the barreled action, bin the trigger, sell the stock and go from there...
