7.62x39 (M43) research uploaded to the Knowledge Base last night.

Will set to work on formatting my 8x57 research for uploading over the next few days.

Cheers, Nathan.

great to see the calibre/cartridge included here.
I use one supressed and feed it with .308 125grn ballistic tip reloads
it has done the job for me on pig at 35ish yards neck shot and using my 150grn bush load took a nice hind with chest shot at 50 yards.
I see a lot of guys have gone down same path as myself and load with .308 projectiles. my loading dies came with 2 expanders one in each size..the larger .311 will not be getting used any more as the .308 size seems to work fine in my Bisly/norinco.

Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your findings, very interesting.

It is possible that with .308 cal projectiles, you will see increased wounding via tumbling if the bullets lose stability on impact. All depends on the exact bore size though. We can use 100 yard accuracy as an indicator of bullet stability however, due to the fact that accuracy is also dependent on bedding etc, a baseline would have to be established with .311 / .312" bullets.

We now have a supply of .312" SST bullets in NZ (Reloaders supplies) if you wish to give these a go (extremely good hunting bullet). I will need to update the KB with this info in due course.

Re: 7.62X39 research uploaded to KB
sad tale of woe.....
lined son up on a good stag at 150 yards max..he hit it HARD in shoulder region it bolted down hill for about 25 yards and tumbled over then staggered down further. all three of us there thought it was done for. I had cross hairs on it but didnt fire as didnt want to "dust his chips" ...well guys we tracked him for over a km recovering pices of leg bone as we went.... no joy. we think shot may have gone slightly low and gone through brisket taking out far side mid leg bone. he traveled uphill and got away from us in the drizzly rain...absolutely gutted. I should have fired.
in hindsight but it was shot placement not cartridge that let us down 3-5" higher and it would have been all good..where it hit a 300weatherby still would have had same outcome.

shot a yearling red hind at 30 ish yards with a 150grn old old coreloct that I had loaded. you remember back when they has a star type pattern around the outer edge with heaps of exposed lead tip??
she went 10 steps max before getting the wobblies and tipping over.
Im getting 1 1/2" for 5 shots sighting in at 70 yards with 125 grn .308 Nosler ballistic tips. good enough for a short range bush gun.

That sounds like Remington's .30-30 bullet. If it is, its quite a good bullet for sure.

Re: 7.62X39 research uploaded to KB
ok here is a question for Nathan or others...
reading data base I see the .30 cal A Max is highly rated down to 1800fps in 30/06 and .308 section....assuming (yes I know....) that I can get them to group within a 4" pattern at 100yards any reason not to think they will be good/great in the x39 ????

Hi Mike
Can't help you with the A Max.
I used 125 ballistic tips in a 308x1.5" Barnes and then in a 30 BR Lapua, I found them too soft for deer. The 308x1.5" Barnes is a 308 case shortened to 1 1/2" probably similar to 7.62x39. I changed to 150 Sierra game kings, they did the job on pigs & deer. I was looking for a calibre to cull Deer around residential areas. I went to 357 mag in a rifle then 357 Herrett, my mate made me a 358 Winchester on a L579 action and my dreams came true, load it down or up, love it!!! I form the cases from 308 Lapua palmer cases with the small primer, tough as, my hunting load gets 2625fps with 225gn pills & 2206H I've loaded those cases about a dozen times so far.

Mike,
I forgot to mention. I was running my 308x1.5 subsonic with heavy Sierra GK seated backwards, gave me much better accuracy and better performance on deer at subsonic velocity.

Re: 7.62X39 research uploaded to KB
Hi Mike, if you read my second book and also watch the video at the bottom of the .308 page, you will note that I have found the A-Max to expand down to 1400fps. Performance may be even better in the 7.62x39 as the diameter (depending on actual bore diameter) is generally wrong leading to greater instability. Accuracy is more the issue but if you can get it going, you may find it works well for you.

Bob, its odd that you found the 125gr BT too soft at mild impact velocities. 1800fps is normally the limit for this bullet (expansion) unless it loses stability below 1800fps on impact and tumbles, then fragments. Very interesting. Have you run .357 pills in your .358 yet?

Re: 7.62X39 research uploaded to KB
Hi Nathan,
I was running the 125 BT at 2450fps, I couldn't get acceptable accuracy at subsonic. The deer was a heavy Rusa/Samba cross at 50m, it looked like I took to it with an ice-cream scoop. Rather embarrassing as the police called me to do the job. Two in the base of the neck just slowed him down, I had to head shoot it.

I have some .357 180 Hornady HP-XTP haven't tried them in the 358W yet, they were very accurate in my 357 rifle. Have you tested them? My rifle would probably push them over 2700fps as the 225gn are doing 2625fps

So far I've only used 225gn Sierra GK & 225gn Woodleigh PP, both shoot 1/2" groups to the same point at 100m.

The Woodleigh's work perfectly, end up under the skin looking like a magazine add. The Sierra's end under the skin with not much left even at at 250m but kill like lightning.

Re: 7.62X39 research uploaded to KB
Ok, now I am with you Bob. Understood.

Yes, I have run .357 projectiles in the .358's including the 180gr XTP. They don't really doing anything spectacular when pushed too far past their design parameters and are best suited to lighter animals when doing so. But- if downloaded, it is not hard to duplicate .357 rifle velocities and performance or step up a wee bit to something in between. Very light recoil etc etc.

I have been lucky so far, pretty good accuracy regardless of the 1 thou undersize.

went out after wallabies yesterday...they are close to goat in body size but not as solidly built. we shot 9 for the day and 6 of those fell to the 7.62x39mm . anything hit went down well, I shot a couple out 150ish and my 14 year old son managed to get two, one at 130ish and one on the run at 50ish. mixture of loads used and rifle ate them all up equally. the three we cut up to have a look sure had good amount of damage with no indication of tumbling seen. absolutly stoked with rifle performance. mate with us was using .308 both rifles suppressed very pleasant on ears both wore GW spartans.
