Pre-fit Barrels

At one time, pre-fits were only available through vendors in the States. Then, through legislation, not at all. I have since found a Canadian barrel maker, out of New Brunswick, that makes pre-fits in a wide selection of calibres.

Re: Pre-fit Barrels
The problem is: which calibre?

I am leaning towards the 7mm-08, but 7mmRem Mag is also looking interesting. I don't have a .22 cal (except for RF), but their range is limited. The .243Win and 6.5 fill my mid-size, and I have lots of .30 cals and up.

But then, 280AI has a nice ring to it.

Why can't it be simple?

Re: Pre-fit Barrels
Hello, Paul. If you already have a Swede and 30-06, seems like a 7mm-08 would be filling a diameter-gap but not a performance gap. Go with the 280AI. Isn’t the gap you want to fill the reason Ackley and Nosler put the effort into cartridge?

Re: Pre-fit Barrels
Hey, Scott. Actually, the main reason I'm looking at the 7mm bore is because I don't have one. Now, if I could get Grant to send me a bull barrel in 7mm Practical that is a drop in for a Barnard PL, I'd be a happy camper.

Re: Pre-fit Barrels
Hi Paul. I’ve been looking to fill a gap, too. Not so much a diameter gap, but a performance gap, somewhere between 243 and 30-06. I think the 7mm-08 is a little too pedestrian, velocity-wise and performance-wise . . . same with the 6.5 CM. I have enough points to draw an antlerless elk tag next year. Nathan’s stories of the Swede’s pitfalls have caused me to view the 6.5 caliber with a jaundiced eye. On the other hand, there are no pigs to hunt here. You seem to be a Swede fan. Do you use yours on anything bigger than blacktails? There’s a 6.5 PRC up for auction near me, supposedly capable of 200 FPS or so improvement on the Swede or Creedmoor. I’m not asking you to second-guess Nathan.

Re: Pre-fit Barrels
Hi Scott. First off, my hunting rifles are all .30 cal or bigger. For what I hunt (at the present) the quarter bores, to me, wouldn't cut it. I can't say I don't hunt deer, only because I've walked around with a rifle looking for one. But, I've never had a chance to shoot one. I'm probably the only guy here that can say that. I hunt elk, bear and moose, and to put me in my comfort zone, bigger is better. Having said all that, I do shoot a multitude of different calibres in different rifles and thoroughly enjoy punching paper.

If I were looking to close up the performance gap, I would probably consider a 7mm., but only because I don't need anything bigger than what I have. You can't argue with the terminal results hunters are experiencing with the sevens.

The quarter bores are fun, and cheap to run, and you can shoot them all day. But to use them for hunting, I'd be hard pressed to go after anything bigger than coyotes, only because of where and what I hunt. And will that 200fps extra really add anything besides some more yardage? It's still a 6.5 .

What about a .270?

Re: Pre-fit Barrels
Paul, you sound like the exact target demographic for my .296 diameter idea! My brother and I have fussed back and forth mildly over whether to call it the 29 something, the .296 Mayfield, or because he has a weird love for metric things the 7.5 something or other. But it sounds like what you need. If I could cram a few years worth of R&D into the remainder of 2020 that might be helpful to you. For whatever it's worth, I find the .280 AI very attractive.

Re: Pre-fit Barrels
I bought a Tikka T3x (as you know) so that I could eventually hang a pre-fit in 7mm SAUM on it. Medium action, medium case and enough volume to put some serious MV behind 160-180 grain 7mm bullets.

I'm making do with the factory barrel in 7mm Rem Mag at the moment because it's a shooter...but...

For long range work on paper/targets the 7mm has a lot going for it...

Re: Pre-fit Barrels
Your comments reminded me that I’ve wanted a 280 since the early 80s.
