rechambering

thinking of rechambering an older 270 Winchester to a 270 Weatherby magnum. the chamber on the rifle has gotten a little loose over the years and accuracy has suffered. the information i found showed the Weatherby magnum has less cup pressure than the Winchester. and that upon initial invention of the round that's all Roy Weatherby did was rechamber a 270 Winchester. a chamber cast would be done first to make sure it would work. i don't like to "give up" on an older rifle if i can still somehow get good performance out it. anyone here have any experience with this?

Ho Joel, it depends on how much meat you have at the chamber end of the barrel. If the barrel has a more immediate taper, it may be a bit too thin for a magnum case, especially with regards to harmonics (accuracy, fliers etc). Also, if your .270 has a 22 to 24" barrel, it may not reach full potential speeds. Finally, if the round count is very high, the chamber may be hard to cut. You can try a new reamer but you will need to remain realistic as to possible outcomes.

Its a lot of ifs buts and maybes for a bore diameter which has not been well supported (bullet weights and designs) in comparison to the 7mm and .30 cal bores. So take your time to weigh up all of the pros and cons.

Re: rechambering
thanks for the info. the rifle is an old single shot that's been passed down. it's pretty hefty. i'm just looking for a way to keep it accurate enough to still hunt with occasionally. guess i'll take it to a shop here local that has a team of professional gunsmiths. these guys work on everything from Gatlin guns to modern rifles. see what they recommend.
