Replacement Barrels

Just to be clear, I live in Arizona. I recently got a Mossberg ATR chambered in 30-06. I don't mind my lighweight 22" fluted barrel but I suffered some injuries while in the service and this rifle is not fun for me to shoot. I plan on filling/bedding which I have discussed with Nathan but I would really like a heavier, longer barrel to maybe add to the potential of this rifle. I understand that there are better platforms to start with that have lots of goodies available, but I want to try something different with what I have.

My Pinto never needed a big block Chevy motor, but its a hoot to drive.

Re: Replacement Barrels
Hi Skweek, I did not know that these barrels are now fluted. I would not be too happy with that either. That said, I have set up some very light, hefty recoiling rifles for clients who want to climb high with the least possible carry weight.

I think to a larger extent, this is a personal thing as you have outlined.

Two possible options:

Rebarrel.

Go through the process of accurizing current platform as a project, test shoot the rifle and see how you like it. If you are not happy with the whole rig, then on sell the rifle to someone looking for an ultra light rig for climbing high. The bedding and stabilizing will only add about 1/3 of a pound.
