Parker Hale Re-barrel

Brodie

Hey fellas, I’ve come
Across a Parker Hale 243 1200. It’s barrel is shot out and need replacing. At this stage I want to stick to the 308 family and am stuck on 260 rem and 7mm-08. Use will be for a Ute rifle with mainly dingos and pigs in mind. Ideally I’d cut the chamber to eliminate the need to go a 6.5cm to handle the 140’s well if I went with a 260. I reload exclusively. I’m
Open to suggestions.
Cheers

Why not go back to 308? Bullet selection and range of weights allow you to load for just about every critter in the outback and easy to get off the shelf if needed.........just my 2c opinion

It’s a good idea mate.. I have a 30-06 that could cover that area if needed was all. I was thinking something that could fill the gaps between 243win and 30-06 in a standard chambering.. I haven’t ruled any of the 308 family out, just seeing if I’m over looking something

Re: Parker Hale Re-barrel
Hi Brodie, I am a 7mm guy and love the 7mm-08, been using it for 35 years and it has never let me down. For your needs if the pigs have tough shoulder blades I would go with the 140gr Accubond or Partition. I am not too familiar with the pigs down under but here the Javelina or deseet pigs as we call them here aren't hard to kill and we usually go for head shots to conserve meat.

I use the 139gr SST with great success on both Coues and Mule deer, Javelinas and Coyotes. But again if the pigs are hard to kill then a tougher bullet might be best.

Hope this helps

Best regards

Re: Parker Hale Re-barrel
358 Winchester? ok out to 300yards but bigger cal than you got......
Or if the action and Mag length allow it...... go for a 6.5x55 Swede. It comes alive with home rolled ammo.........

Re: Parker Hale Re-barrel
Thanks for the feed back fellas. It’s essentially a 98 action so any of the ‘x57’ shells would be ok. I entertained the idea of a 7x57 for a bit but I reckon the 7mm-08 is more practical in this instance. The Swede would be good too as I load for my dads. At this stage I reckon I’ll keep it under 30 cal because the pigs don’t require more at ranges I shoot and projectiles get pricey, I reckon the 358 would be a handy round to have just the same.. It’s more of a theoretical need then a practical one for this gun! Thinking a 24” tube at about a forester profile. The SST would be ample for anything on the east coast if I went a 7mm. Woodleigh make a good range of pills that would suit 260 velocities also.
I guess what I’m saying is a 260 would probably do the job but I want a 7mm

Re: Parker Hale Re-barrel
Seeing that you reload exclusively, I would have suggested .284 Win to fill the Mauser action nicely. You say you are stuck on .308W family - is that for ease of brass availability? Would a 6mm Rem or 7x57 not fit the action better (or even 6.5x57)? A 100gr Partition in a 6mm Rem should handle dingos and pigs, except the very largest, nicely, and you already have a .30-06. Or perhaps a 6.5/.284 for which the brass is now perhaps more common than straight .284W?

Given that you have the .30, I also thought of the 5.6x57 as a nice fit for the action, but the thick-necked brass is a pain for handloading, though you have the capacity for launching the heaviest, or toughest .223" projectiles at speed...

Half the fun is in making the choices, but then favouring an 8x60s over my other rifles is perhaps a bit contrary.

Re: Parker Hale Re-barrel
If you want a little more power you can also go with a 7mm-08 AI, get an extra 100 fps, you can fireform with regular 7mm-08 ammo and use it as well in case of emergencies.

Re: Parker Hale Re-barrel
Well Brodie a 7x57 would give you your 7mm cal and it makes the most of every aspect of the action and rifle. Why not use it all...+Ackley if you wanted.... as Luis has said the Ackley gives a wee bit more with the added ability to use non AI ammo. A mate of mine has a Model 70 in 30-06 that hes used for years with brought ammo. I used it at the range one day and as I picked up the fired brass it looked a bit square at the shoulder. When compared to an unfired round I said hey man this is an Ackley chamber. He said. Whats that? Lol

Re: Parker Hale Re-barrel
Yeah the 284 come to mind straight up I just worried about feeding reliability from the mag. Probably not an issue but just that it’s a rebated rim case I thought it might play up. Do any of you fellas have any experience with it?
I was mainly thinking for brass availability to keep it a 308 based case but there is plenty of 7x57 or 257bob brass about. Thought about a 25-06rem or 270win also but yeah just need to adjust the mag box I’d say.

Ha that’s pretty wild that he didn’t know it was an Ackley! That 30-06ai would be a handy round, it would pretty much be a beltless 300h&h wouldn’t it?

Re: Parker Hale Re-barrel
If you want to stick with the 308 case family I definitely go for the 7mm-08 but if you want something out if the 30-06 case then the 280AI would be my choice, almost the performance of the 7mm Rem Mag.

I like the 7mm-08 because ammo for it is everywhere just in case, for example, my godson was going to use his late grandfather's 280 Rem but had some issue with the rifle so I lent him one of my 7mm-08's but I did not have time to reload for him, so I had him buy some Hornady American Whitetail Ammo with the 139gr Interlock which I know the rifle likes. He took down his first deer ever with it, a nice 8 point coues deer 3 weeks ago.
