Norma 7mm-08 156 gr Oryx

Has anyone got any experience with this Norma factory load? I checked Knowledge Base and Cartridges book and couldn’t find much on it. Considered use case is on large bodied whitetails (Maine, I’ve seen several whitetails killed that dressed out at 250 lbs, 200 lbs is not massive-just big), sub 250 yds. Outside chance to see a black bear-bear generally run smaller, 300 lbs is a pretty big one. Bonded bullets scare me a little, afraid they won’t open at lower velocities...blowing up on a shoulder scares me more though. I’d like to shoot something a bit heavier and tougher than the usual whitetail bullet if it will still open. Any and all feedback appreciated. Thanks

Hi PJ,
I’ve used the 156 gr Oryx in 6.5 Swede (factory). Had it pencil through on a 180 lb red deer (heart shot , 40 yards) went 100 yards with the heart shot in half. And pencil on a 40 lb roe deer @ 20 yards too. Haven’t used it since.

PJ, if I were you, I’d almost certainly go with Federal’s 150 grain Speer Hot-Cor. It’s not very expensive, produces good velocities, and the bullet should work quite well on those game species and weights.

I hunt whitetail that are roughly the same size as what you describe, if I was using a 7mm-08 I’d very likely be running the 150 grain Hot-Cor.

Hi PJ, take note of what Peter said, he is right on the money with this.

Duly noted-140 gr Partitions or that 150 gr Federal blue box load it will be, then. Your input is appreciated-thanks

Peter, ice picking the 40 lb lamb is almost forgivable given the range-your story about the larger bodied deer is why bonded and mono-metal bullets scare me. Where I’m hunting, if I try really hard on a power line, I might find 300 yds of unobstructed view...odds are I’m taking a shot under 75 yds though.

Ryan, I think you nailed it, double canellure Federal Speer load...I know Nathan is a huge fan, too. Occam’s Razor...simplest solution is invariably the best. If there was a 150 gr factory roundnose load I’d be really tempted...

To get brass for my 7mm-08 I used the Winchester Supreme Ammo with the 140gr Ballistic Silvertip, they averaged 0.6" groups at a 100 yds and they worked great on Mulies and Javelina from 75 yds to 400 yds, one shot kills. They aren't going at magnum speed so they don't blow up on impact and I ended up with some nice nickel plated brass.

I now reload it for the 7mm-08's and the 150gr on my 7mm Rem Mag amongst other bullets

I've also used the 139gr SST on the 7mm-08 with awesome results, at close range and up to 500 yds without blowup as well.
