Long time Hunter/Shooter/Reloader Just Finishing Nathan's Books

Willy BartelHello,A little introduction. I've been shooting actively for almost 30 years, hunting and reloading for the last 20. I've been on a few forums...reloadersnest and canadiangunnutz. I've shot about 20 big game animals, the farthest just shy of 400yds. I shoot and load for 7-08, 350 Rem Mag, 303 Brit, 30-30Win, and 223 Rem. I've been checking Ballistic studies for info for a few years now (maybe as long as 5?). I live on the West Coast of Canada and work in the high Arctic near Greenland. My schedule is 2 weeks at work 2 at home. I fly about 6,500km each way. I try to shoot every time I'm home aiming for twice a month. Lately I've been frustrated with my shooting and got the urge to buy a new rifle as a cure-all. I've also been wanting to support Nathan so I bought the book series. I read several books while flying to and from work and I feel like it has already saved me piles of money. When I read the books or articles on the website it has directly correlated to my experiences and gives the reasons for the outcomes. I've had deer do long dead runs and deer that are basically DRT with the same rifle, cartridge, and bullet. Nathan's insights have exposed the reason why. I'm looking forward to rebuilding my shooting from the ground up since as I've been reading I can see and understand the mistakes I've been making. I'm very excited to begin putting these methods into practice. Willy |

Willy BartelRe: Long time Hunter/Shooter/Reloader Just Finishing Nathan's BooksPaul,I moved to the lower mainlaind for my wife but I grew up in the Cariboo/Chilcotin where I often travel to hunt as well as visit family and friends. I often hunt around Merritt now since it's half the drive. With both Merritt and the Chilcotin as my usual hunting grounds you can understand why I'm trying to improve my proficiency to at least 400yds. Nathan, Yesterday was my first range day since I started reading your books. I was fiddling around a bit trying to get comfy with my elbows and getting a single wrap of the sling. Our benches are painted and it took a bit of trial and error to get my rear bag to stop sliding. I did bring a trio of guns to shoot with my brother in law and eldest daughter so moving from a military 2 stage on the p14 303 to my Remington (Timney) or Ruger(lightly reworked) caused some surprises. My first group with the 7-08 was 1.5" after an hour and a bit of shooting I settled down for one last group. The second shot was 1" high and left and didn't feel right the first and third were touching. I haven't mastered my checklist yet but did go over breathing, grip, trigger finger(pad not joint). I took my fourth shot and finished with 3 touching for .5" I was very meticulous about loading in the morning and it paid off. Thank you for your books, I'm looking forward to improving my skills. |

It made a world of difference with a proper weight and virtually no creep. I couldn't find the packaging but Timney call it the Springfield and Enfield Sportsman. Mine came out of Ontario, so they are available in Canada.Big bucks in the Chilcotin, for sure. We've wandered around the Farwell Canyon and the Big Ranch. But I'm not much of a deer hunter, so it was more of a hike. But I can see the need for the 400 yard practice. Keep reading, it changed my shooting life. |

They've been into 303 in a big way for years they even have a Cartridge/Reamer named after them. 303Epps. Cleaning after the range...this has been a bugbear for a couple years since I mounted a scope and reworked the stock. The barrel is badly pitted and muzzle worn. I should probably cut a couple inches off and recrown. Can you confirm that it's the correct trigger? It's listed as TRIGGER ENFIELD SP E1-5 6-SHOT MAG. Item: MGA 111 Hmmm I found Thomas posts and your P14 thread... the 6-shot seems like it might be the m17 trigger. Can anyone help? |

Thomas KitchenRe: Long time Hunter/Shooter/Reloader Just Finishing Nathan's Bookshi willy and welcome to the forum.i have two p14's one in 308 norma mag and one in 6.5 rem mag. i have both the 5 shot trigger and 6 shot trigger the 5 shot is shorter in how far the trigger hangs down. i prefer the 6 shot timney trigger as i think 5 shot one is little to short. i can take photo's if needed. ellwood epps was a very smart man, his epps reamer design was to help stop case stretching but did improve the performance. one thing to keep in mind when working with 303 british is the shoulder angle on the ammunition is less then the chamber as part of its design so its better to neck size using lee collet die. i do like 303's like most kiwi's my first centrefire rifle was a lee enfield, i do own a few including a 35/303 now and still own my first one which is a parker hale sporter model. |

I think last year or so you told me to get a .308 Norma Mag, and yesterday I finally found one on an Eddystone Model 1917 action. A very beautiful custom rifle from the 1960s. But it is too pretty. I want to move the action over a synthetic stock to accurize. Should be identical to the P14 under the hood. Is that an all carbon stock or carbon and aluminum? I don’t find any such synthetic stocks here for a 100-year old rifle. Is this a Kiwi-only creation? |

So much so that when I finally get around to finishing my 7mm Practical project I am hoping that Chris will consent to making me another stock - colour undecided at the moment. I really rate Chris's stocks, he does good work.Hi Willie, Welcome to the forum. You are working in one of the places on the planet that I most want to visit. I guess the Northern Lights are old hat for you now. Which begs the question can something as spectacular as the Aurora Borealis become old hat? Paul LevermanRe: Long time Hunter/Shooter/Reloader Just Finishing Nathan's BooksJohn, the Model 17 was the American version with the bolt face suited to the .30-'06 rim, while the Pattern 14 was the British issue with the bolt face opened up to accomodate the .303 British. The extractors are slightly different in the angle which is presented to the rim. Without a slight modification to the extractor (and bolt face), the M-17 will be hard on your brass, and possibly eventually damage the extractor claw. |

I would probably have to pick it up and bring it back myself February-March next. Let’s discuss practicalities and prices. Steph can give you my email address. I have a U.S. Winchester Model 1917 service rifle (same model as my grandfather carried in the Great War), a Remington Model 30 Express commercial, and now this Eddystone custom. All of them are essentially the same rifle and I can de-stock them to measure actual action configuration. I bet they are the same as the P-14. |

As per your suggestion I will form some .308 Norma Mag from these and “give it a shot”. We will see what that extractor does. The rifle has a pretty barrel on it and someone spent some money building the thing. It would be nice if I can get it to shoot long range with some accuracy. I might put up some pix of the three customized service rifles I have. Nice stocks, nice barrels, nice blueing, nice work. I’m sure these personal pets are from estate sales. I don’t see someone spending all that time, money and love on such a project just to sell it off; cold dead fingers most likely. These custom conversion go for less than $300 USD here. No interest, better to get a Ruger American or some such. |

Steph FosterRe: Long time Hunter/Shooter/Reloader Just Finishing Nathan's BooksJohn: Yes I have a lovely Stiller Predator left hand action which will eventually be my other precious baby.It will end up weighing around 10.5lbs (about the same weight as a baby) and will have a fairly hefty recoil but fortunately I am woman enough to handle that - luckily I am not a man or I might not be able to cope with the weight or recoil. This rifle is on the back burner at the moment though - simply because we are busy with test rifles, research and other projects that we are juggling. Maybe it will start to come together toward the end of this year. Steph. |
