Bullet for Tahr with the 308 - 168TMK or 168 ELDM ?

IainThe title says it all.Not trying to stretch things out too far. Just want to be prepared if an opportunity presents at 400 to maybe 500yds with no way to get closer. Are 100 yard shots and ball joints likely to be a problem for either of these bullets ? The rifle isn't a speedster, and I am expecting around 2650 ish MV. Is either one likely to offer any on game advantages over the other ? Thanks for any input. |

Nathan FosterRe: Bullet for Tahr with the 308 - 168TMK or 168 ELDM ?Hi Iain, yes, moderate speed is the key, plus bullet weight. In the 6.5 bore, this would be a no-go, the ELD-M will at times fail, more so at higher speeds. But in your rifle, all will be well. Of the two, try the TMK. The differences are discussed in the cartridge book. Note also that the 175gr TMK is a highly effective design though I doubt you will need it. If running a 168gr and with shots averaging 300 yards as they seem to do, your impact velocity will be around 2200fps. |

Garrett PasqualeRe: Bullet for Tahr with the 308 - 168TMK or 168 ELDM ?Hi IainI dropped a nice 12 inch bull with a hand load 150 sst at 280 yards with the 308. Dropped on the spot. I have shot a lot of animals with the 150 and it has never let me down, I am currently using the heavier 168 a max as recommend in Nathan's book's. Thar are very thick skinned so projectile choice would be key in the 308. I would imagine the goal posts would change a lot with further distance given that they are a very hardy animal. I have found that the most important thing with thar (if you want to recover them) is not what you shoot them with but where they are standing when you shot them. Think crampons, ice axe and rope.[b] |

IainRe: Bullet for Tahr with the 308 - 168TMK or 168 ELDM ?Thanks Nathan and Garrett.I have the 168 TMKs for a slow moving project, so will definitely work up a load with those. Garrett, I have used Ballistic Tips in the past and although they are rather emphatic (much like your SST experiences) out to around 250/300, to me they seem to lose some of their horsepower past that distance. I'm not an SST fan, but I would imagine their performance would be similar. |

Garrett PasqualeRe: Bullet for Tahr with the 308 - 168TMK or 168 ELDM ?I only used the 150 sst out to 400-yards ish mainly on reds and with a 9 power scope which I felt was the comfortable reach for that set-up.I haven't shot a lot of thar but I imagine that 400 yards with a 308 for that load would be nearing max for such a thick skinned animal. I think the 168 would definitely be a better option. |
