Benelli R1 .308 Semi-Automatic Rifle - Piston and Piston Extension Question???

Completely stripped, cleaned carbon etc. and reassembled this rifle.

Of particular interest is the Piston seeger, a sub component of the Piston extension part 399V.
Part 399V being two cylinders with one fitting internally to the other and the union maintained by the Piston Seeger, part 302W.

The part numbers are from the Argo-E Spare parts List Table 3 drawing.

This Piston Seeger: basically an non sprung c clip made of aluminium.

Prior to disassembly part 399V, the Piston extension and the Piston, part 412, rattled/banged against one another. The piston has a recessed area to accommodate the piston extension as a matting area. I reused the Seeger to assemble the Piston extension and mated the Piston and piston extension without the previous disjointed banging by using the seeger as a compression fitting to prevent these two parts from being disconnected and bashing against one another. Basically expanded the seeger until compression maintained the two components in a joined matted engagement.
These two items slide within the gas collector cylinder that is fixed onto the barrel.

Dam, almost sounds matrimonial or sexual, Haha.

The Question? Should the Piston and Piston extension be free of one another or was the manufacturing assembly sloppy with the two parts never being assembled/matted correctly??

Please, don't suggest I ask Benelli as I've not had success in email responses.

Hello Thomas and thank you for taking the time to provide the link.

As the piston and piston extension were independent of one another on the unit that was featured in the video I will be rectifying the alteration of the seeger to allow the two components independent travel.

Cheers!

Hi Frank, yes the parts need to be independent.

I truly would appreciate knowing WHY?

I looked at the system again and cannot understand WHY two pieces of metal should be slamming against one another.

The piston is a special material that interacts with the barrel for guidance and on the opposite side the pins for sequential operation of the bolt group. It would be too costly to manufacture the piston in the entire length, in my mind. So the piston extension is created with a narrower interior for gas flow and to complete the extension. Stay with me here please for my critique based on observation of parts availability.

As I look to purchase an O ring, c-clip and seeger for this assembly the parts that are available come in a kit. $150 USD for the Piston, piston extension, cylinder plunger pin, seeger, c-clip, o-ring and the cylinder with screws for mounting to the barrel. Why are these items in a kit unless there is damage incurred due to high velocity collisions?

I truly would appreciate knowing WHY?

Removed the seeger from piston extension after separating the two pistons. Re-curved the seeger and installed onto the piston extension.
Rifle back to original mechanical condition.
