6.5X55 160 Grain Loads

Nathan,

Thanks very much for sharing so much valuable information and experience on your website. I recently purchased a sporterized M38 Husqvarna with Lyman 57 receiver sight and have been working up hunting loads with Lapua brass and Winchester LR magnum primers. The details are:

130 Nosler Accubond, 44.2 grains H414, COAL 3.050"
140 Nosler Partition, 48.9 grains W780, COAL 3.025"
160 Hornady RN, 46.8 grains of W780, COAL 3.000"

All are showing MOA or better accuracy at 100 yards so the next stage is to shoot them over the chrono and then see how they perform at 200 yds. This week I started working up a load with the Woodleigh 160 PPSN and there is a sweet spot at 46.8 grains of W780 but I think there is another one past 47.7 which is a high as I've tried so far. Do you have experience with this bullet and if so would you share it?

Walt

Re: 6.5X55 160 Grain Loads
One more thought, the loads I listed are over Hodgdon's max loads and work in my rifle without pressure signs but I don't recommend them for anyone else. I worked up to these in 0.2 to 0.3 grain increments.

Re: 6.5X55 160 Grain Loads
Hi Walt, I do not have experience with either the 160gr Woodleigh in 6.5 or W780 powder in the 6.5. Sounds very interesting.

Am glad you are enjoying the site Walt, sorry I could not be of more help.

Re: 6.5X55 160 Grain Loads
Nathan,

Thanks for the quick reply. W780 was the only slow powder I could find last month and I was lucky to get an 8 lbs jug. The burn rate is similar to H4831 and it seems to be performing well. Most of my reloading experience is with Varget and I do use 35.8 grains of it with 140 and 142 SMK's in the M38 and M96 for punching paper. Both rifle shoot sub-MOA with this load. I use Varget for .223 Service Rifle X-course with 77 and 80 SMK's and also in .308 and 30-06 with 168 and 175 SMK's. I just worked up 8X57 and 8-06 loads with 200 Speer Hotcors and 200 Nolser Partitions with Varget also. All are sub-MOA.

I'm looking forward to you publishing your 8X57 knowledge in the data base.

Cheers,
Walt

Re: 6.5X55 160 Grain Loads
I did some work a little while ago with W780 in the .270 Win with the 165gr Matrix. I was not able to obtain any higher velocity than with other powders but I noticed it had a good BD. Should be good in the Swede because I find I have to fill the case near to the brim to get up to speed with 140 grain bullets using H4831 (ADI2213sc). My rifle prefers 50-51 grains which is a very high charge. Now to repeat your statement- I cannot recommend my loads for other rifles and can near guarantee the charges written above will be dangerous in some rifles.

It really does sound interesting Walt. I hope you get a chance to chrony loads. Please keep your camera handy if you get a chance to hunt with the Weldcore's. Why did they ever stop calling them Weldcore?, was such a great name.

Yes, I really want my 8x57 data up too. I love the cartridge- and the 8mm-06 as well, what a thumper. There are still a lot of 8x57 fans about. Anyone reading this who owns an 8x57, please look after your barrels, make sure they are well oiled or greased. Say hi to your rifle from me LOL.

Re: 6.5X55 160 Grain Loads
Nathan,

I'm happy with the accuracy the loads I've worked up with W780 so I hope I'll be happy with the MV's when I chrony them. I'll post my results but it won't be for a couple of weeks. I hope I can try the 160 Woodleighs on pigs in Hawaii this winter and promise to send photos

Re: 6.5X55 160 Grain Loads
My sportorized 1901 M94 in 6.5x55 likes 39 grains of IMR 4350 with a
Hornady 140 gr. SST bullet.
My sportorized 1924 M96 likes 46 grains of RL22 with either a 140 gr.
Hornady SST bullet or a 140 gr. Nosler Partition bullet.
Both are great rifles and game getters.
