A good Mate gave me some .270 projectiles a while back as he sold off his wsm. there was a box of 140 grn hornady plain old lead tip jobbies amoung them so I thought I would load a few up reasonably hottish (my old rifle likes it hot) and see how they went with intention of shooting wallabies with them......the price was right... well they grouped very good and seen as though rifle sighted in with them I used single round last month to take big red hind at 300ish yards out in open tops.no fuss no bother, crosshairs on shoulder and deer was good enough to run 50 yards towards me across side creek before expiring.... just got back for big mission weekend trip.saw 8 deer in total and fired grand total of one shot. again a 140 grn hornady again big red hind this time at 250 yards, same result she went 20 yards then fell over.nice neat holes through shoulders, lungs in bits...pack weighed 50 kgs the only bits I left behind were bones from head to tail ,skin and puku....so she not a small animal.
man these simple old school loads from and old school cartridge in an old school wood n blue rifle, fired by an old school bush hobbit are just plain boring..... shall I sell poohseventy and buy a Grendel????? or a tikka in 7mm08???? like f%#& I will (dont even like latte coffee) lol.

Re: boring....
Tom the point I was trying to make is that you dont need the flashest new rifle or cartridge to kill deer deader than dead. the two deer Ive shot in last month as stated above werent any less cleanly taken out by using older rifle to do so.... I believe far too many people are getting caught up in hype just for the sake of it....same goes for the solid copper being better brigade. for what its worth I lost 1/2 a teaspoonful of meat from todays hind....

Re: boring....
Mike how would they go at factory ammo speeds? How hot (fps) are you heating them to?

Re: boring....
I bought my Sons first rifle and took him on his first hunt in 2015. I told him to start looking for a 3006, and said its old school but it will do everything you'll only need one gun. Shortly after he came back and said can you come with me the guys at the gun shop are bagging you and making jokes about the old fashioned noise gun. Same thing happened when I sent him out for plain old Hornady lead tip ammo. We had to special order 180 grainers. He's shot 2 Red Hinds and 5 Fallow with his old fashioned noise gun and shit bullets so far, none went further than 2 steps. The Farmer were we hunt calls him one shot Josh. Old school got to be old school because it works but don't be scared to try new stuff as long as it follows in the footsteps of old school common sense otherwise we would still be chucking spears. Red Stags in March this year and out comes the ELDX for the old school noise gun. Counting down the sleeps, I'll post the result if we get lucky.

Re: boring....
Warwick...... 1 grn above book max with AR2213 out of a 21" barrel (thats with tape measure stretched!!) so they wont really be going that fast compared to what guys with decent length barrel will be able to get...at a guess 2900 fps???
good on you Dennis...you got to love the dirty06 and winchester 180grn loads from .308 really impressed me as a bush load.

Re: boring....
Hi Mike, for the last so many weeks I have been hunting with my sporterized Enfield (but fitted with a True-Flite stainless barrel with the foresight reinstalled). It has been a pleasure to be out with the old rifle and it is good for me to cycle back to the beginning so that I do not lose perspective within my research. I will post more about this rifle when I have time.
