35 Whelen. Is it worth it?

Hi everyone.
I would appreciate some advice please. I already have a 7mm Rem Mag.

But I have the opportunity to buy a second hand Remington 700 BDL chambered for the 35 Whelen with EAW Apel mounts and bases, and a cheap scope (hakko superb). Here in Spain, the whole set it will cost about 1900 €, i have the oportunity to adquire it for 750 €, the rifle is in really good condition.

I usually hunt red stag, wild boar and fallow deer.
I am thinking of using it as a bush/ woods rifle, I think Remington 200 grain factory ammo works well. What is your opinion?. Unfortunately, i can't reload.
Do you think it's worth buying?

Finally, excuse my English level, I am still learning.

Much appreciated.

Hi Marcos, your English is quite fine.

The rifle sounds quite expensive (much better at 750). These are however a good rifle with some basic work (bedding, trigger).

I suggest you check to see whether you can obtain more than one type of ammunition. If ammuntion is not readily available and you cannot hand load, it may not be the best purchase (although the rifle could be fitted with a .30-06 or 9.3 barrel later). If ammunition is scarce, it may be better to choose a rifle chambered for the 9.3x62 and make use of Geco ammunition if you can find it.

Hi Nathan, thanks for you answer.

A new Remington 700 BDL, cost about 1300 €, here rifles are quite expensive.
I said Remington factory ammo because i think that could works well. But
200 and 250 grain Corelokt is not complicated obtain, Federal Fusion is hard to find, Hornady 200 grain Interlock is cheap, and relly easy to find and Barnes 180 grain TTSX is a little expensive but easy to find.

I have also consider about the 9.3x62, but although it have good light to medium game bullets, like Norma Vulkan or Geco SP, i think most of the bullet have to much sectional density and low velocity for the animals in my area.

Warm greetings.

Well it sounds like it might be a nice fit Marcos. The Whelen is certainly enjoyable to use and very effective.

I have just buy it, as soon as I am able, I will go to the shooting range, I have read your Long Range Shooting book, so I know how to shoot properly, although I am still learning, obviously.
If the rifle don't shoots well, i have your Accurizing and Maintenance book, so I know what i have to do.

Thats the way to go Marcos. If it won't shoot, then make it shoot. You have the tools you need to do this.

A very nice project.

Re: 35 Whelen. Is it worth it?
Hello again.

I just wanted to comment how turn out to be the rifle.
The first time I fired the rifle, I fired groups of around 35 mm, at a distance of 50 m, using factory ammunition remington 200 gr Core lokt. I would like to shoot at a greater distance, but it is what I have in my current location.

With the help of Accurizing book and Troubleshooting video. Now, the rifle produces groups of 8 mm, at the same distance, using the same factory ammunition.

Thanks to Nathan and everyone who has helped me with this project.
I am delighted with the rifle.

Regards, Marcos.
