Weatherby Mark V

Hello--This is my first post. Thank you Nathan for producing such find books and information. I have finished reading the first two books "Long Range Hunting Rifles" and "Accurizing and Maintenance". And like someone else just recently posted "I am frustrated"! I purchased a Mark V in 270 WYB BEFORE I read Nathan's books. The 1 O'clock test shows barrel creep. I put a dial indicator on it and it is crawling out of the stock by .015". I am planning on Gluing and Screwing to fix this issue. However, the trigger has some creep in it. I have adjusted it to the lightest pull which is about 3.5#. I am tempted to adjust the sear engagement screw which Weatherby says not to do. I followed Weatherby's instructions on breaking in the barrel and I have gotten 1/2" groups at 100 yards with my reloads, not so good with Weatherby.

I am tempted to just Glue and Screw without worrying about the trigger right now. Any thoughts or advice on how to move forward would be greatly appreciated. I am not apposed to replacing the stock but if I can make this one work I would rather do that.

Also just saw that Timney makes a replacement trigger that has much better adjustments.

Thanks MB

Re: Weatherby Mark V
Hi Monty, it sounds as though this rifle has plenty of potential.

Keep in mind that I do not like to divuldge book details on the forums so I will keep this brief.

1. Yes, do go with the Timney, that will be the simple fix.

2. Yes, try glue and screw. Make sure you float the barrel first (remove pressure points and dab some mat enamel paint over the ground area). Look for any other seesaw points in the action area and relieve them. When doing the glue and screw, use minimum possible screw tension until the epoxy is cured, then bring to full tension. If you screw hard immediately, the B&C stock will flex. Make sure the mag box has some float / wriggle when doing this. The figure .015 is not so bad, you will be able to rectify this without much fuss, you may find most of this was in relation to the pressure points. But again, do not bring to tension until the epoxy is set.

3. Later, just for kicks, you may want to contact Corbin and see if they can make you a draw die (7mm to .270 bullet draw) for the 7mm 162gr ELD-M. I am not sure whether they have tried this yet and it is a major step down for this bullet design but they may have a few tricks up their sleeve. Again, just for kicks if you can afford it and if Corbin are willing.

All the best!

Re: Weatherby Mark V
Thank you Nathan for the quick and through reply! So I have checked the fit of the aluminum bed by using Prussian Blue. It is making good contact on the tang and in the recoil lug area (which has a epoxy it it already). I can easily run a .020" piece of cardboard between the barrel and stock so there are no pressure points. My plan is to glue and screw as you describe above and as outlined in the book after I install the Timney Trigger. Looking forward to getting this girl dialed in.

Thanks again MB

Also have a couple of fun projects after this one including my Dad's 03 that he picked up in Hawaii during the war. He sporterized it in the late '40s but it now needs help, but that is for another day.

Re: Weatherby Mark V
No worries Monty. Just to confirm the book info, the U.S.A product code name for CRC Soft seal is CRC SP-400. Should be easy enough to find.
