Quoting pet loads!

I only want to high light the dangers of quoting a pet load, not lecture, embarrass or single out anybody for ridicule etc.

Below is a “Internet load conversation” l had with a fella very recently and the exact reason l will not quote pet loads ever!
You may have an excellent understanding of a given calibre, reloading techniques, your gear & dangers that come with it but do others????

Me; How is that new ___ rifle working out for you mate?
Owner; Ahhh, its shown some promise with these pills and that powder
combo.
That’s great is this a finalisation of that load?
Nah, l read on the internet on a few forums this is the go-to load
combination for this XXX calibre!
Oh, have you used this powder or pills before?
No never tried either before, but seen it quoted a few time so must be
the go!
That’s up at the top end of the charge you should be working up to it.
It works for other blokes so should work for me & it saves heaps of
stuffing around!

Any moderately competent reloader can see the blaring faults and major dangers with this approach. The intended recipient (& most others) may be very diligent in working them up which will show up any variations in equipment, components, environment & techniques but the information you type is readily available for anyone to read.

You could think stuff the idiot but next time at the range they may jump on the bench next to you…….
Anyway, food for thought hey!

Yeah. Would you put Petrol in your diesel car and drive off down the highway! There's being stupid and then there is making yourself look dumb! !!! You're stupid if you THINK about using an unknown load recipe straight from a forum. And dumb if you DO ...... equivalent to using your hands to unblock the lawn mower chute with the motor running! !!

I certainly hope you read him the news Martin and maybe put him onto Nathans book sets to start him off at least with a solid basis for reloading safety

saying that it does not surprise me at all coming from the range you frequent
being an ex RO from that range believe me I have seen it all and it is a common practise among the sub clubs to do exactly what you have described, and I am talking about all the sub clubs
just because someone shoots in a club it does not mean they have any common sence or knowledge,
what gets me is it is allowed by the club and there insurance
I have a collection of cases with mishaps from these people

Re: Quoting pet loads!
The RO did suggest its not the done thing but that was it.

I used to try to advise them Mark but got into way to many heated discussions at that range doing that so l just keep to myself out of the way now and only go as needed!

Re: Quoting pet loads!
Well as horrific as it would be for someone to blow themselves and their rifle up plus innocent bystanders will provide the example needed to get the message across to club members. Martin maybe posting pictures of rifle damage, burnt n broken flesh and bones through over charging and incorrect reloading practices on the club notice board will make a point. But keeping to yourself and doing your own thing under the radar so to speak is way less stressful for sure.

Re: Quoting pet loads!
I thought I'd post what one of the cases looked like from using someone else's load data without working up to it
the lines are deep ridges and are what I expect is about to blow
the person who gave this to me, said "I'm testing soandso's from my sub clubs loads that are good in his rifle what do you think of this"

he couldn't believe my reply

Re: Quoting pet loads!
that looks like brass from a G3, or other fluted chamber...not ideal for reloading, sensibly or otherwise

Re: Quoting pet loads!
no Tom it came out of an old parker hale mauser 308 standard chamber,

Re: Quoting pet loads!
I think Tom is correct about the brass being used in a fluted chamber at one time. The marks are too uniform and look like rifling with no twist. I have never seen case pictures of pressure signs in any reloading manual either.

Just search for 'rifle brass from fluted chamber' on the internet and look at the pictures.

Re: Quoting pet loads!
I just googled "rifle brass from a fluted chamber" and wtf never heard or knew about it, seems I upset old mates day for no good reason except not to willy nilly use other peoples reloads without working them up first
you can learn something new every day
regards Mark
