Need Wisdom on how to make a 284

I have been shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor as my hunting rifle and have had good results with it so far, but do have started to look into the 284 win as a caliber to replace that 6.5cm.

On a budget and dont really want to rebarrel a rifle to do this. Is there a particular make of short action rifle( 7mm-08) that can be re chambered that will take the 284 win with the 180 grain Eld-M?

Im also a little confused about discussion on deep seating as my creedmoor is seating a 140 ELD-M way of the lands to fit my mag but still shooting good velocity and touching hole groups.

Any advise would be appreciated!

There has been a lot of comments online recently on the positive aspects of the .284 Winchester. Ammo is not easy to find for it and brass is hard enough to find that most persons are forming their own brass.

That is not something I would look forward to. For my rifle use anyway, it would be for hunting only, so I would go for the 7mm-08, 7mm Rem Mag or .280 Remington...all of which I can buy decent quality brass for. Just my thoughts and there are a lot more, like the 7mmSAUM for precision shooting or hunting too, but as you no doubt know already, the .284 Win is an accurate cartridge as well, and is more than capable but then so are those others.

HI Stan
The most common method around here is to get a tikka in 7-08 and get it reamed to 284. Then change bolt stop and magazine to long action ones.
The down side is the knox of tikka aren't not very big so there isn't lot of meat left around the chamber.
I don't believe this method would have the twist to stabilize 180's

I would try to avoid cramming a 284 into a short action.
A friend of mine has just used a howa long action as a base for his 284, grant at true flite has done the work for him so it should be good.

In all honesty if your on a tight budget a 7mm rem mag is lot easier to buy off the shelf and find dies and brass for. You can always down load it to 284 speeds

As Thomas has mentioned the 7mm Remington Magnum is a decent option. Mine is based on a modern Husquvarna action with a 25 inch Benchmark barrel, and puts five rounds consistently into sub 0.5 moa groups, as long as there is not too much wind to mess me up, so I cannot complain.

Thanks guys,

I actually stumbled across a savage model 16 7mm-08 that has a 77mm magazine size short action. I will try build the 284 with this and see how it goes.

Appreciate the replies.
