.280AI Bullet considerations for medium-large game

I've just built a .280AI on a Tikka T3 action. I'm debating on using one of these combinations for larger game such as elk, bear, and mule deer:

162 ELD-X and 4831SC 3000 fps

175 ELD-X and Retumbo 2850 fps

168 Nosler Accubond LR and Retumbo 2900 fps

175 Nosler Accubond LR and Retumbo 2830 fps

The fps numbers are educated guesses, i haven't perfected my loads, and haven't even tried Accubond LR's, I just know they are longer and will give me a little less case capacity.

I've had good experiences with .308 168gr Amax on whitetail deer, and am hoping for even better performance with the ELD-X, which I already have quite a few 162grs bought.

I have shot game to 650m and would like to be able to engage up to 1000m if necessary.

Does anyone have experience with those bullets mentioned above, and their respective weights in any 7mm platform on medium thick-skinned and large game?

Bernskoetter.....Hi! Let me be the first to prescribe the purchase of "The Practical Guide to Long Range Hunting Cartridges" Second Edition. The literature will cover all the projectiles you mention.

Saludos from Mexico.

I'll second that about Nathan's books. Please go to the knowledgebase if anything and have a look at the 280. You didn't state what distances you are taking these animals at. Bullet selection is extremely critical for the distance you will be shooting and size animal you will be hunting. Having said that, I don't think you could go wrong with a Nosler Partition Bullet. BC might not be the best but it is probably your best dual purpose bullet out there.

Hi. I have .280AI with a 1 in 10 twist, 26 inch barrel. Based on my experience with the cartridge I think you velocities are a bit optimistic. Being in NZ our powder choice is somewhat restricted to ADI products in terms of consistency of supply. Out of your list I have only used the ADI equivalent of 4831 (ADI 2213) and the 162 Amax and was achieving around 2900 fps. However, accuracy was inconsitant with some groups going below an inch and others above, which relates to my 1 in 10 twist rate. My best results have been achieved with Nosler 150 BTs and ADI 2209 (4350) (3050 fps), and Berger 168 Classic Hunters and ADI 2213 (just over 2800 fps). The Berger's have the better down range performance for deer (reds, sika and fallow). I've tried the Nosler 150 LRAs, but they seem very fiddly to get right. Best of luck.
