I just acquired a Schultz and Larsen 54J rifle in this caliber, 1-12 twist, 26" barrel. I would be interested in comments from anyone who owns one similar about your preferences in bullet weight(length) and loads. Thanks --Greg

Hi Greg, sorry for the late reply.

These rifles do often show a preference for the 140 grain weight. Traditional go-to's where the 140 grain Interlock and GameKing. These days we can make use of the 139 grain SST which is quite a good bullet if you want to reach way out long. If possible, start with the 139gr SST to establish a baseline.

Thanks for the input. I am waiting for some of those. I was looking on the Shilen barrels site, and they list a .284 caliber barrel in 1-12" and reference it as special high velocity. I think I'm going to call them to ask just what is behind that reference. --Greg

If you choose to re-barrel, I would opt for 9 twist. If you intend to shoot very long or wish to hunt larger body weights, it would be wise to choose this for the sake of versatility and the animals hunted. If you are based in NZ, I believe one of the family members of Barnard have a fresh x61 reamer and may loan it out (It may be at True-Flite at this time of writing). Keep in mind that this rifle could just as easily be re-barreled to the near identical (in performance) 7mm Rem Mag for ease of components and tougher brass options.

Re: 7x61 Super (S&H)
Hi Greg,

I am currently in the process of getting a S&L 65DL Re barreled in 7x61.
I have just placed an order for my own chamber reamer from Dave Manson Reamers in the US. The cost is $170.00 for a fixed pilot reamer. This reamer is made to order, so wait time is between 6 & 8 weeks.
I am based in south Auckland NZ, & would be happy to loan it out once I have finished with it, if you are in NZ.
Once I get my rifle back I plan to start load development with a 140 grain projectile, more than likely the Hornady SST as Nathan has recommended.
This cartridge was originally developed with IMR4350, so I am going to try AR2209 (H4350) & see how that goes.
Here is a link to some load data provided by Hornady.

Norma is the only supplier of brass that I know of, & Hornady make a full length sizing set for 7x61.
If you want. Lee Precision Can also make you a set of dies if you supply them with two empty fired cases & one projectile for testing.
