7 Mag/162 Amax-High Velocity Loads

Back from the farm and a test of the Amax. Loads were H-1000 , Fed GM210, Rem brass, seated .010 off the lands. I decided to kill two birds with one stone. Test for group and drop chart. Zero at 300 yds. Target set at 600 yds.

72.0 - 3 inch vertical dispersion - 4 inch horizontal
73.0 - 5 inch vertical dispersion - 3.5 inch horizontal
**72.2 - 1.5 in vertical dispersion - 3.75 inch horizontal - I'll take this one!
Had a slight wind, but did not try to hold for the wind. The 72.2 grs had a 43 inch drop that calculated a MV of 3100 fps. Heading back down in 2 weeks for Thanksgiving and will test load out to 1100 yds.

And no deer on this trip.....bummer!

Thanks Jim. What was the final velocity gain over the original load.

OK, thanks Jim. I see that puts you at 1400fps (adequately wide wounding) at 1340 yards. That is some distance. I generally call 1800fps as the cut off point for ease of wind doping etc', requiring a higher degree of skill at reading the environment effects below 1800fps. Your load breaks 1800fps at around 955 yards. Again, that is some range for sure.

We are very lucky in our part of the country in that wind is rarely a factor. The overwhelming majority of our shots are at the crack of daylight and right at dark. 1 to 2 mph wind is about the max you have to deal with, nothing like the mountain winds and thermals that you have to deal with. We do practice a lot during the mid-day for the wind and mirage.

@ im2lazy

I'll be in Heaven when I can get a deer to step out beyond the 1000 yds mark!
