30-30 single shot SP bullet selection

Hello I'm new to the forum. I have a question about which SP bullet would be the best for east Texas deer. They never get bigger than 200 lbs with most around 150 lbs . Since I use a single shot I can use SP bullets instead of the flat nose they have to use in lever actions. I've worked up a load with LVR powder that shoots .5 inch groups at 100 yards with Speer 150 gr BTSP.at avg velocity of 2535 fps 12 feet from muzzle. The question I have is with that bullet work well at that velocity and how far?

Thanks for the help
Danny

Hi Danny, welcome aboard. The Speer is a good bullet in that it has a very soft jacket, ideal for lower velocity work. It will do what you are asking of it.

Having said the above, when you have time and funds, I would like you to try the 168gr ELD-M (or 168gr A-MAX) which has a wee bit more momentum and is slightly more emphatic on impact.

Based on your 150gr load, velocity and energy for the 168gr load will be roughly the same as the .303 Brit with an excellent fast expanding bullet that holds its velocity well.

Sight the rifle 3" high at 100 yards to give you a zero of (I am guessing here) around 220 yards depending on your sight height. That will put you about 3" low at 260 yards and say 7" low at 300 yards. I may be well off but this should give you some indication of how you can make use of the trajectory.

I have loaded the 168 gr Amax with my 26 inch barrel 30-30 I get 2367 12 ft from muzzle. I'm 1.97 inchs above muzzle with scope. So you're calculations are close. What I don't know is terminal ballistics. That is where I'm looking for your experience and expertise. I can't find a 168 ELD here in Texas. I seen some of the articles on the new ELD bullets but haven't been able to get my hands on any. I would also like to try them in my FNAR 7.62 with 20 inch barrel. Have you had a chance to shoot anything alive with one yet. I have some 155 Amax also. So you say the amax will open up fast enough on my East Texas Whitetail at the low velocity ?

Thanks for the help

hi Danny.
i don't want to go into to much depth because Nathan's cartridge book really gets into the fine details and i won't do it much justice.
because of the soft nature of the amax's they transfer a lot of energy creating a wide wound.
you may get away with the 155gr amax's in a 30/30 because of the lower velocity but the 168gr are a better choice.
have a read of this and watch a few of Nathan's you tube video's might help.

Ok I'll load up some 168 Amax and try them out on some hogs. Thanks for the help.
