TUBBS FINAL FINISH :-(

Rifle 243 Savage model 11, 9.25 twist, 22 inch barrel. The rifle actually shot well but it was a bear to clean. You could shoot 10 rds and it would take 2 hours to clean the barrel. I decided to try the Tubbs final finish kit to smooth out the barrel so it would clean up easy. My 7 mag Hart will be spotless using only 8 patches at most. I shot the Tubbs kit 2 day ago and the barrel is slick as the whistle, but none of my former loads will hit a bull in the butt with a bass fiddle. I had been shooting the 105 Amax and the 95 gr Nosler BT. The Tubb kit are Sierra 107 gr match bullets which I assume are used because of the greater surface bearing for better fire lapping. The odd thing was the last 5 rounds of the polishing bullets produced the group just under .5 MOA @100 yds. I didn't think that a 9.25 twist to stabilize a 107 gr anyway. Any thoughts or suggestions at this point?????

Hi Jim, unfortunately, this does happen from time to time.

If the barrel has button chatter (common with Savage) the bore is left with an even mix of high and low spots. If you study the muzzle in sunlight, you will be able to see the chatter. You may need a magnifying glass or use a camera (macro setting) so see the chatter.

Tthe trouble is, once the high spots are knocked off, the bore is heading towards being oversized.

Throat damage can also occur, basically excessive wear. Much will depend on the initial lead angle of the throat, how much grit was on the bullet ogive, things like that.

The first thing to do is re-measure the max COAL and re-adjust seating depths as required. Then work up loads as though you were starting over. If nothing works, try experimenting with bullet jump. Simply take the best load of the previous loads (say 42gr of X powder produced 1")- then use the same powder charge, but try two different jumps.

If this does not work, apart from trying other bullets, it is time to consider re-barreling.

I use firelapping more as a last ditch option than a front line attack. I know where you are coming from though, cleaning for two hours is no fun.

I called Savage and they said to ship the rifle to them and we'll go from there. Hopefully they will replace the barrel. Let you know how it goes.
