BSR here did an excellent bit of description on this efficient 338 diameter cartridge. The 338-06 resembles to a degree the old 318 Westley-Richards
using very heavy bullets like the 250-275 gr Nosler Partition or Speer. The cartridge also resembles the 333 Jeffrey in performance. With premium bullets like Nosler or Swift, one can reduce the bullet weight enough to pick up both actual and terminal velocity.

My favorite bullet in the 338-06 for big game is the 210 gr original Nosler Partition. It allows a substantial increase in velocity with little given up in close or down range performance. Your bullet choices will depend on the individual rifle. My personal choice is an original pre-64 Model 70 that decades ago was cut-rifled and re-chambered, retaining the original 24 in barrel with iron sights.
It is quite accurate with bullet weights from 210 through 250 gr in Nosler Partitions or Accubonds. I also have some Swift and Woodleigh bullets with Dead Toughs to experiment with. My rifle prefers medium to slow powders ranging from IMR 4320 through IMR 4350. Reloader 15 is also a favorite
as is IMR 4064.

Before case-forming, it may be wise to anneal case necks. While I have some original A-Square marked brass, I prefer to use re-formed 30-06 cases to
compare results. The Winchester rifle digests all recipes of handloads with aplomb. As WDM "Karamojo" Bell said about soft nose bullets in his 275 Rigby solids only Mauser barrel, so shall I say about lead bullets in my 338-06 Winchester. Not polluted with them!

Should one wish to increase loading potential 8-10 %, there is the
option of re-chambering an '06 platform to 338-06 Ackley Improved.
It offers a bit more powder room and is just as efficient, with increased performance dependent on the individual rifle.

Dies for both cartridges are available from RCBS or Redding, as well as Hornady.

I initially used a set of RCBS 338 Winchester Magnum dies to neck size my cases. It worked well until my new 338-06 dies arrived. In some cases with slower powders, the Magnum Rifle primers worked just as well as Large Rifle primers.
Your experience and individual rifle will tell the tale. Good shooting!

Re: 338-06 A Sq/338-06 Ackley Imp
i've read nathans knowledge base on this cartridge , and it's reliance on bullet choice . i was wondering if anyone has tried 180 and 200gn woodleighs designed specifically for 338fed and 338-06 in this cartridge? also hornady make a 230gn eldx in 338 bore . i'm looking at building a 338-06 to compete in group one big game comp at my local range , whilst also having something practical for goats, pigs and deer in east coast australia . i want to stick with 338 over 358 bore as there is a lot more projectile choice , specially for paper punching . i had a 358win so i know what 35 cal is about . any feedback or opinions would be appreciated . cheers

Hi Richard, as I wrote in the KB, I suggest starting with the 200gr SST. This is the fastest expanding (energy dumping) projectile available at this time, usitable for light through to medium sized game. Try it for a while and see how you go.

If later on you decide that more penetration is required, then perhaps look to the Woodleigh. Bonding (in addition to a low BC) can inhibit the exchange of energy on target, especially at lower speeds (low water resistance) but is a suitable choice for tougher animals at close to moderate ranges.

Re: 338-06 A Sq/338-06 Ackley Imp
thanks for your reply nathan , the 200sst is one i'm definitely looking at . i emailed woodleigh about their projectiles and he informed me that he had a 338-06 built a few years ago and was very impressed with it , having used it on everything from roos to buff . i wasn't sure if you'd reviewed the latest 338 offerings from woodleigh , that are made specifically for 338fed and 338-06 velocities . i was advised to use 200gn projectiles for these specific cals on deer and pigs as the 180gn are a bit more suited to lighter game . thought i'd ask around for opinions on this .
you have my thanks for taking the time and making the effort to compile your knowledge base as it's a great reference for hunting loads . as i said in my earlier post i was looking at doing a comp and having a useful rifle for hunting . but in hindsight i'm probably better off sticking with rebarreling my musgrave 98 into 30-06 as this is probably more suitable than 338-06 for what i'm hunting . already have a true flight barrel ordered and on the way in 30 cal too.
i might have to buy another rifle if i want to do this comp i think. there's a No4 mk1 in 444 marlin for sale locally , that might be interesting . lol .
thanks for your time and response . cheers
