Tikka T3X in 30-06?

Hi.

Anyone with first hand experience with T3X stainless in 30-06? Are they generally easy or finicky to load for? I've loaded for 15-20 of them in 6,5x55 and a couple in 308, and they never fail to please. Usually 0,5 moa loads within 20-30 shots, and large enough accuracy windows to allow for the largest temperature swings, imperfect coal etc.

Kind Regards

Magnus

Hi Magnus, its been fine in my experience, capable of sub half minute accuracy. Barrel length is 22" so don't expect sizzling velocities. Expect a basic 2700 to 2750fps sweet spot with a 180 grain projectile.

Twist is 1:11, best suited bullets up to 180 grains but it handles the heavy weights without issues. The magazine box does however pose some limitations (84.5mm usable) with modern plastic tipped bullets.

The Tikka .30-06 handles some jump but if using the longest of match style projectiles (208gr), expect moderate speeds (2400 to 2500fps) as a result of both the 22" barrel length plus long bullets seated deep into the powder column (unless you want to single feed).

A couple of examples of max OAL's:

178gr ELD-M: 84.4mm.
200gr ELD-X: 85.5mm.
208gr ELD-M: 87.8mm.

Ideally, it would be nice to seat close to the lands but the Tikka does not really allow for this with modern projectiles. Regardless, I have seen good results when the bullets are seated to mag length - but cannot speak for all rifles. All I can say is that I have 'gotten away with it' so far.

Of the variants, I prefer the laminate stocked (stainless) rifle in .30-06 to help tame recoil, noting that this variant sometimes needs bedding. These days one could perhaps opt for the Veil fitted with a muffler.

Hope that helps. All the best.

Thanks alot. That's very helpful. I'm just kinda playing with the idea of one for now, just to satisfy my curiousity. Good to have a rough idea what to expect. Most likely we're talking 175-180's or there about anyway, so this sounds promising (I have a lengthened Mauser for the 208's). But I know how these things go, so I won't hold it against you if I end up with a dud.

Cheers

Did Tikka increase the contour of its threaded barrels to withstand the muzzle heat caused by a suppressor? Suppressors are becoming all the rage in the US. Some are now ported to function as muzzle brakes as well. There are no over-barrel suppressors available. Maybe muzzle heat isn’t an issue.
