I'm looking into a camcorder. Like others there's plenty of stuff I need, so can I be talked into one?
Nathan yours seems to be good. Panasonic v550. But there not made any more.
And replaced by the w570.
Iv been looking and most are about $700. But iv managed to find a place in n.z that's 500.
Almost too good to be true.

So many guys using them?
I'm not looking at becoming the next you tube sensation. So what do I do with it.
Record and store range sessions. Maybe also relaxed hunts where pressure isn't on.
Take note of my form.
Can these be used like a spotting scope? Mostly rabbits, As that's more relaxed and I'm not worried if one runs away if I'm playing with a camera.
Are they just handy, or really good to have?

Re: camcorder
I bought one years ago, for whatever reason. It's a Panasonic HDC-TMC60. Don't know if they are even still available. I have used it for recording jet boat trips up our favourite river, capturing the local wildlife as it walks past the house or feeds in the fields. They make great still cameras (even though it is only 5 meg). I think I was going to use it to record hunting scenes, but I found that it was always the last thing on your mind when in pursuit or pulling the trigger. I think, like Nathan, you would have to have a dedicated camera operator to do it properly. They are nice to have, of course, but really to me they are just another toy. Also, the optics are rather good. The one I have has a twelve power (I think) zoom, with a digital zoom to 35X. At the 35X, you lose some clarity, but not bad depending on range. The 12X is good for bringing in antlers close enough to count points if law requires it. One nice thing about using it for viewing game, you can use the zoom, watch the screen, and still have your head up to watch the game and the surrounding area. Hope this helps.

Re: camcorder
This is a small sample of what you can expect from a mid-range camera. The microphone is very sensitive (turn your volume down or off, there's nothing but wind and boat noise), the colour is good and picture quality is ok. This is just hand held over the wind screen.

Re: camcorder
Hi Jason I have a Canon SX700 HS Camera that takes HD pictures and videos.
It has a 30x optical zoom and 90x digital zoom giving a total of 120x zoom! It's bloody amazing! Here's a picture of a boat at Mahia beach no zoom and at full zoom

It cost $400NZD at the Dubai airport duty free June 2015

Re: camcorder
Nice rig, Warwick. I wish they had that kind of quality when I was buying. It's typical though, if you wait three days, your computer/camera/car or whatever is outdated. I think when I was shopping, the highest zoom you could go on a camcorder was 60X with digital, and it was CRAP! Looks like they've come a ways since then.

Re: camcorder
Jason - do not believe what you see on that youtube link. It is horrible. Not sure what happened, but that is not what to expect. The original looks like tv. It still has bad sound, but that youtube just plain sucks. I was going to take it down, but it shows our hunting area and it was a nice day. We got two moose about an hour later.

Re: camcorder
Thanks Paul Here's some video. I think if you do your homework and inspect the system before you buy it you'll get what you looking for. I was lucky that the Dubai Airport lounge is nearly a KM long and when I zoomed in I could see an Arab eating McDonald's at the other end LOL! Nah not a cheese burger! Was a "Big Mac" and yes he did "Have fries with it"!!!!

Re: camcorder
Good choice, Warwick. That Whelen of yours would pop him right tight twixt the eyes, but you might want to wait until he's a little closer. Where he is in the video is too thick with the willows. When he came in, he was about ten yards out. What we were really after is the cow you can see just in front of him. She went down real close, so way easier to pack to the boat. Her brother (not seen until the cow was down) was about five yards behind her to the right, so we ended up with two on the ground and way too much work. But we ate good for a year.

Re: camcorder
Yes Hunt Smart Not Stupid. Let your meat deliver itself to the easy area before you process it. You'd never get something that big Out of the willows would you?

Re: camcorder
You definitely pick your shots. Not just on target but on the after-shot as well. We are fortunate that we hunt rivers. The boat doesn't complain when we pack it full of gear. We are probably spoiled, as we have at least two chainsaws. One for clearing the willows, the other equipped with a cable winch. It is still very much a long and tedious effort to get them out to the river. If we were to have shot that bull where he stands in the video, I would guess that it would be a good 4-5 hours before he was in the boat, and then it is still a good two hours downriver to camp, so we would be back well after full dark. But, and this is something we always tell ourselves, "We'll never shoot one like that again, until next year."
