Craig Henard

Remington 700 Long range rifle,26 inch barrel
Approximately 200 pound Whitetail Buck
Range approximately 150 yards
Deer was standing basically facing me (at a small angle)
I placed Federal Blue Box 7mm Magnum, 150 grain Bullet 3/4 way up from bottom of chest on the near side shoulder,Purposley place a little forward on shoulder, deer gave small buck and took off.Deer ran 100 yards before dropping.
No sign of blood but prior knowledge of hunting area for 45 years give me an Idea of where he was going and I found him.
After hanging and skinning the BuckI found at least a 3 inch hole in shoulder with lungs destroyed and bullet on offside of deer about mid belly balled up between hide and body.
Bullet had retained core but lost mushroom and was just mashed to approx .375 caliber
Bullet not soft enough even at this close range for good performance ? or Just one of those times when animal didn,t know it was dead !! ???

Thanks
Craig

I run a 7mmRemMag using 154gr SST at 3070ft/sec. My last two deer have been shot in pretty much the manner you describe, that is frontal chest at relatively close range, 100m to 150m. Neither took a single step. Looking at the damage of the second one showed the bullet completely destroyed, with little off-side exiting. However the heart was severed from all arteries, the lungs were a jelly like pulp and the bones from ribs and upper leg were just splinters embedded in the far side. It's serious damage. I'm going to develop two loads for future hunts, retaining the SST for closer shots and something else, like the AMAX (depends on availability) for longer ranges. Sure the 154gr SST makes for some meat damage, but as I said, the (red) deer didn't do anything but flop straight down and twitch once or twice.

Thanks, that bullet performance sounds great but I will have to handload as the factory loads shot like buckshot out of my rifle.

Still curious about the performance of this load though.
Shoots into .5 inch at 100 out of my rifle.

Got to looking at the cases and want to know what is going on with the cases.
There is a darkening around the case neck on all the cases.
I took a pic and hope it shows up well enough for a diagnosis.

Thanks
Craig
