Few new projectiles from Hornady probably most interesting for us are
110grain 257 eld-x with decent bc .465
230 and 270 338 eld-x
195grain 308 eld-m

Re: New Hornady projectiles
Thanks Thomas, very interesting to see the bonded DGX bullet in the line up- had to happen eventually. I have been going over my .375 notes at the moment so this is timely. When I tested the first of their heavy game pills, the brass jacketed Interbond shattered on impact (heavy animals) when driven fast. The next steel jacket non bonded bullet was OK but expansion was not always even as the lead swiped off the jacket and with the jacket made of steel, it would not not always fold back uniformly. The best description of this bullet, would be 'an acceptable budget bullet for large game".

For now I can only guess how the new bullet will perform. It "should" go very well if the lead adheres to the jacket, forcing it to fold back. Hopefully a good option for the 378, RUM, 460 and so forth.

Also interesting to see the new 30 cal subsonic bullet with deep notches in the jacket to help it overcome the issues of copper resisting expansion at sub speeds. This bullet will have a paper thin jacket. Realistically, the jacket serves only to prevent lead fouling when employed in this manner, smooth functioning and so forth. It also has a very wide meplat and deep HP leading into the lead core. Nice to see these no-bullhit designs coming through. It shoes the lengths one has to go to get these things right. One cannot simply make a bullet and expect expansion at low speeds, just because it looks the part.

It is a pity that it is so hard to make a heavy .257" pill that will work in standard twists. Those who have my second edition Cartridges book will have zero trouble interpolating the max effective range for the new 110gr ELD-X bullet based on current notes with 100% reliability. If you cannot make this interpolation, then you have not properly read the formative sections.

It is the medium bores that now need support. And looking at the current products and knowing how trends go, there is room for this over the next three years. People are going to tire of new 6.5, 7mm and 30 cal bullets soon enough and with a need to have something new to launch each fall, Hornady may eventually want to address the medium bores again, just to pump up sales. On the other hand, low recoil is the big thing now and folk are being trained into this, combined with poor form. So it may be very hard to reignite any love affairs with the big stuff.

Re: New Hornady projectiles
The subsonic in .30 cal will interst me. There are Lehigh defence available in Australia at about $2 per projectile and I haven't purchased any yet
I used some reduced loads in my .308 for dispatching trapped pigs yesterday, why, because I wanted to test them and because the .22 has a fixed 6 power and unsuitable ammo.
Pigs were trapped for pest management but have a variable scope on .308 and reduced loads with .130gn Speer and trailboss as the propellant, not to noisy and clean results on agitated pigs wanting out.
I can't have a suppressor as a hunter but I am interested in using reduced loads on pigs under 100m, does anyone have any experience or advice. It would be nice to take out small mobs with a little less noise hoping they will not scatter as quickly

Re: New Hornady projectiles
thank you Nathan very interesting notes about DGX look forwards to seeing 375 on knowledgebase.

did run some numbers through shooter app just to see how the 25-06 and 257 weatherby stack up, its pretty good if you were hunting fallow/white tail it might be worth looking ino
could work well in the short length magazines.

Warwick after watching Nathans ruger american video i emailed ruger about bringing it out in 358win.
i suggest other people do to, i think a light handy cheap 358win would get the market there for new 358 projectiles

Re: New Hornady projectiles
Aussie,

You might be better served with a bigger bore and wider meplat projectile? Maybe something like 357 lever gun or 44mag? Usually shorter than bolt rifles too for close range dispatch; can pop a red dot sight or something. Or just leave them open and use the iron sights for longer shots.

I think the mobs will run regardless at that range. Once one drops they tends to get moving.

Re: New Hornady projectiles
get couple heading dogs to bail the mob but that's a discussion for another day.

just having look through ammunition
under precision hunter they have 25-06 loaded at 3140fps
257 weatherby at 3240fps i would expect a little quicker from the weatherby makes you wonder if they toned it done to prevent bullet blow up.

few new loads 338 win mag with 230gr eld-x

the precision match 300win mag with 195gr eld-m at 2930fps will be helpful for none hand loaders.
they also offer 300 norma mag with 225gr eld-m but don't list velocity, not sure if there is factory 300 norma mag rifles yet.

on slightly separate note sierra have released a 150gr smk with bc of .713 obviously its of no good to us hunter but what was interesting was their notes about changes to ogive and leade angles of chambers.

Shooters around the world will appreciate the accuracy and extreme long range performance of our new 6.5mm 150 grain HPBT (#1755). A sleek 27 caliber elongated ogive and a final meplat reducing operation (pointing) provide an increased ballistic coefficient for optimal wind resistance and velocity retention. To ensure precise bullet to bore alignment, a unique bearing surface to ogive junction uses the same 1.5 degree angle commonly found in many match rifle chamber throats.

While they are recognized around the world for record-setting accuracy, MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are not recommended for most hunting applications. Although MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are commonly used for varmint hunting, their design will not provide the same reliable explosive expansion at equivalent velocities in varmints compared to their lightly jacketed Hornet, Blitz or Varminter counterparts.

This bullet requires a barrel twist rate of 1x7.5” or faster.

Thanks,
Ive used a .357 Lever action Marlin for destroying injured cattle, pigs in traps and smallish pigs at around 50m with success on all accounts.
Its registered to my wife so i dont use it often.
I travel frequently for work and work in the bush so i carry a rifle frequently and that is the reason that the reduced load s or even subsonics make carrying with the .308 versatile along with full loads for hunting.
On occassion the situation is that subsonics in a .308 would have some advantage shooting pigs although i know they will still spread id like to think they will be a little bit confused giving me an edge
Whats important here is that I would like to source reasonably priced .30cal or 7mm bullets suitable for use with subsonic loads. Does anyone have a part no or stockist in Australia?
i would be keen for feedback on my Meopta post in optics.
